Baltic Art Center visar 6 mars - 25 april en utställning med Katarzyna Kozyra, en av Polens mest uppmärksammade kvinnliga konstnärer. "Hon får oss att ompröva våra värderingar genom att avslöja verkligheten" skrivs det i en katalogtext. Kozyra är en kontroversiell konstnär som rör om, tar strid och ibland utsätter sig själv för upprörd kritik. Ett exempel på detta är "Bathhouse" (Badhus), ett videoverk med inslag av Rembrandt och Ingres som spelades in 1997 i det berömda badet på Gellert Hotell i Budapest. "Bathhouse" filmades med dold kamera och väckte en upprörd diskussion om privathet, moral, skönhet och åldrande. När hon senare blev inbjuden till Venedigbiennalen genomförde hon en uppföljare på samma badhus, fast denna gång på männens avdelning. "Men´s Bathhouse". Här visar det filmade materialet männens beteende, även denna gång inspelat med en dold kamera. En monitor vid ingången visar hur konstnären maskerar sig till man, och hon/han uppträder även i det filmade materialet. Att ta sig in förklädd till man betraktades som en provokation och orsakade en stor debatt i Polen. "Men´s Bathhouse" belönades med ett hederspris på Venedigbiennalen 1999. Badhus för män visas nu för första gången i Sverige, och att de två badhusinstallationerna visas samtidigt ger besökarna en möjlighet att smygtitta på mäns och kvinnors beteenden, likheter och olikheter i samma sociala situation, inte minst skillnaden i den manliga respektive kvinnliga blicken. Kozyras slutsats är att kvinnorna uppsökte badet för gemenskap och avkoppling, medan männen gick dit för att iaktta och bli iakttagna. Skillnaden mellan verkligheten och hur kroppar framställs i reklam och media får oss nästan att betrakta den kommersiella framställningen som en förfalskning av riktiga människor: "Jag ville visa kvinnor på riktigt, inte den artificiella offentliga bilden av kvinnor", säger Katarzyna Kozyra. _____english_____ The works of Katarzyna Kozyra point to the most important issues of human existence: identification, identity, transgression. "Women´s Bathhouse" (1997) was the first in a series of works made using a hidden camera, shot at the public bathhouse in Budapest. The installation consists of a main screen showing a four minute looped projection, and five monitors showing unedited films. These present scenes from the bathhouse, recording the prevailing atmosphere. Reproductions of classical works of art have been edited into the footage shown on the main screen: Rembrandt's Suzanna and the Elders and Ingres's The Turkish Bath. "Men´s Bathhouse" (1999) was produced for and first shown at the Venice Biennale, where the work received an Honorable Mention. Men's Bathhouse consists of four simultaneous projections (each lasting 8 min.) onto four 105 x 140 cm screens mounted within an octagonal architectural structure, suggesting the interior of a bathhouse. The projections are visible both within and outside of the construction. The screens show scenes from the footage shot at the Budapest bathhouse, and show men's behavior at the bath while being filmed with a hidden camera. The artist is disguised as a man and appears among the other men being filmed in the bathhouse. A three minute film of the artist disguising herself is screened on the small monitor situated at the entrance of the installation. Hanna Wróblewska
