Galerie Hiltawsky is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of the celebrated French photographer, Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand (b. 1945), presented in Berlin on this scale for the first time since 1986. The exhibition includes 38 works from 1999 through 2016.

Since 1980, Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand has employed traditional photographic techniques, (i.e. daguerreotype, photogram, solarisation and strobe photography) and experimented with a nostalgic revival of the medium’s versatility. His conceptual approach is born from a creative exploration and reinvention of photography that utilises analogue images, which oscillate between academic rigour and poetry.

Inspired by Pygmalion fantasies and the playful discovery of hidden magic in the everyday, Bailly-Maître-Grand uses photography to realise these visualisations. Through his images, he composes and reveals surprising perspectives of reality, which confirm an understanding of the world that is both palpable and emotive as well as attestable.

Following his master’s degree in physics (Paris, 1969), Bailly-Maître-Grand devoted ten years to painting and then began his photographic practice in an attempt to create his world. Investigating physical paradoxes of matter, space, time and motion this photographic physicist has manifested a significant oeuvre. His seemingly inexhaustible work is also imbued with a poignant humour.

Bailly-Maître-Grand’s work has been internationally represented for the last 25 years. His works are held in countless, renowned museum collections, including; MoMA, New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris, Fonds National d'Art Contemporain, Paris, The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich and The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.

The exhibition presents a collection of works from the series, "Gueules Cassées", "Gouttes de Niepce", "Vanités", "Les miroirs d'antan".

Zum ersten mal nach 1986 werden wieder Arbeiten von Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand (geb. 1945) in einer Einzelausstellung in Berlin gezeigt. Diese umfasst 38 Werke von 1999 bis 2016.

Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand beschäftigt sich seit 1980 mit alten Techniken der Fotografie (u.a. Daguerreotypie, Fotogramme, Solarisation, Stroboskop-Fotografie) und experimentiert mit einer nostalgischen Wiederbelebung der ursprünglichen Vielseitigkeit des Mediums. Er hat die schöpferischen Gesten der fotografischen Praxis immer wieder neu untersucht und dabei einen rein konzeptuellen Ansatz entwickelt. Seine analogen Bilder oszillieren zwischen wissenschaftlicher Strenge und Poesie.

Der Künstler verfolgt pygmalionische Phantasien mit dem spielerischen Willen, eine verborgene Magie des Alltäglichen zu entdecken, sichtbar zu machen und durch die Fotografie zu materialisieren. Bailly-Maître-Grand komponiert und enthüllt in seinen Bildern unerwartete Ansichten der Realität, die ein Verständnis der Welt sowohl durch Ertastung und Erfahrung als auch durch Studium bezeugt.

Nach einem absolvierten Studium der Physik im Jahr 1969 in Paris widmete er sich die folgenden zehn Jahre der Malerei, um schließlich mit der Hilfe von fotografischen Werkzeugen seine Welt zu erschaffen. Der Fotograf-Physiker durchdringt physikalische Paradoxien von Substanz, Raum, Zeit und Bewegung, die für die Konstitution des fotografischen Aktes wesentlich sind. Sein scheinbar unbegrenzt vielfältiges Werk ist dabei auch voll mit einem berührenden Humor geprägt.

Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand ist seit 25 Jahren auf der ganzen Welt vertreten. Seine Arbeiten sind Teil zahlreicher, renommierter Museumssammlungen (MoMA, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Nationalfonds für zeitgenössische Kunst, Sainsbury Centre, Norwich; The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne usw ...).

Die Ausstellung zeigt u.a. eine Auswahl von Arbeiten der Serien "Gueules Cassées", "Gouttes de Niepce", "Vanités", "Les miroirs d'antan".
