The Photobook Workshop is all about the creation of photobooks, from initial concept through curation, sequencing, layout and design to eventual production and marketing.
Comprising of an intensive one week collaborative workshop, the course will cover the varied contemporary publishing models, from indie zines to high quality luxury editions, from traditional photography books to avant-garde photobooks that push the boundaries of the publishing medium.
The course mentors will work in close collaboration with the participants to create a book from one of their own photo projects and will cover concept ideation, image curation, sequencing, layout, design, material selection, binding techniques as well as essential aspects of production, distribution and marketing.
This Photobook Workshop is designed for photographers with a completed photo project by the time the course begins and provides a great opportunity to test different book editing approaches before committing to print.
Presented and hosted by Fotogalleriet, the Photobook Workshop will be led by Nicholas McLean, founder of the independent photobook publisher Éditions du LIC, and Alessandro Calabrese (art photographer, FOAM TALENT and Professor in the Master Program in Photography and Visual Design at NABA, Milan).
Following the success of the first Art & Publishing Mentor Program run by Nicholas McLean (Founder/Publisher at Éditions du LIC) and Alessandro Calabrese (FOAM TALENT 2015 and Professor at the Master Program in Photography and Visual Design at NABA, Milan), Fotogalleriet is proud to host a photobook workshop.
Éditions du LIC is an independent publisher specialising in the creation of provocative contemporary titles by emerging and established avant-garde photographers. Founded in 2012, Éditions du LIC operates as a collective, bringing together photographers, designers and writers to produce limited edition artist books.
Titles published by Éditions du LIC are regularly exhibited at major international photography events and sold in leading bookshops, galleries and museums around the world.
Alessandro Calabrese was born in Trento, Italy.
He graduated in Landscape Architecture from IUAV (University of Architecture and Visual Arts), Venice, in 2011.
In 2012 he moved to Milan, where he attended the Master in Photography and Visual Design at NABA – the New Academy for Fine Arts. In the Fall 2012, he spent a period in Amsterdam working as an assistant to Hans van der Meer and carrying out research for the platform Paradox.
The first artist residency he attended, in the Aosta Valley, gave rise to his first publication Thoreau (Skinnerboox, 2014). He moved back to Milan, where he currently lives and works, in 2013, and started teaching photography at NABA and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergamo. In collaboration with Milo Montelli, he curated the book A Drop in the Ocean – Sergio Romagnoli (Éditions du Lic, 2014), first exhibited at the festival Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia.
He participated to the 2015 Fotomuseum Winthertur’s annual Plat(t)form, an international portfolio review aimed at promoting young emerging photographers. His third book, Die Deutsche Punkinvasion (Skinnerboox, 2015), was exhibited at Fotopub Festival 2015 in Novo Mesto, Slovenia and at the BredaPhoto Festival 2016, Netherlands.
Selected among the 21 emergent talents in international photography by FOAM Magazine in 2015 with A Failed Entertainment, he participated to the respective group shows at Unseen Photo Fair & Festival (Amsterdam), Atelier Néerlandais (Paris) during Paris Photo, De Markten (Bruxelles) and Beaconsfield Gallery during Photo London (London).
Since 2016 he is represented by the gallery Viasaterna in Milan, where his work A Failed Entertainment has been exhibited as part of the collective exhibition 2016 – On New Italian Photography, curated by Fantom.
He has been recently awarded the fifth edition of the Graziadei Prize with the project A Failed Entertainment, exhibited for the first time as a solo show at MACRO Museum in Rome during Fotografia, Festival Internazionale di Roma.
Invited to exhibit A Failed Entertainment at the festival Fotografia Europea within the collective exhibition Archivi del futuro, in the same occasion he presented the new homonym book A Failed Entertainment, published by Skinnerboox.
Currently he is working on a new body of work called The Long Thing, previewed at Viasaterna during his first solo show in Italy called IMPASSE.
