Over the course of five decades, Graciela Iturbide has created an intense and profoundly singular body of work, which is key to the understanding of the evolution of photography in Latin America. This retrospective is presented in the context of the International Photography Award Alcobendas that was awarded to the Mexican photographer in its fifth edition.
Iturbide was an assistant to Manuel Álvarez Bravo, the great maestro of Mexican photography, who transmitted to her a sensitivity based on values in tune with modern art and above all with Mexican culture.
Her works, endowed with a unique atmosphere reminiscent of magic realism, early on began to depict the reality of the indigenous villages of Mexico and in particular, subjects involving the everyday customs of women.
In Graciela Iturbide´s oeuvre, of special note is her portrayal of the women of Juchitán (Oaxaca), the portraits of the Seris indigenous community in the desert of Sonora, and her fascinating essay on birds.
