"IDEA INTO ACTIONS. LONG-TERM PROJECT FIRST STEPS"

Workshop: Saturday/Sunday, May 19/20, 2018, 10am – 6pm (in English)

A photographic long-term project is a big challenge. The French photographer Mathieu Asselin (*1973) has been involved with the chemical giant Monsanto for years and documented the sometimes devastating effects of the company's activities. This project was finalised in his book, called "Monsanto®: A Photographic Investigation" (2017) which was awarded several times and is shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Award 2018. In this two-day workshop RAY 2018 artist, Mathieu Asselin, shares his experience in the field of long-term photographic documentation. The workshop at the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt aims to give the participants the tools needed to structure and organize a project and most importantly, to give the idea, the kick-start it needs to move forward.

Mathieu Asselin began his career working on film productions in Caracas, Venezuela, but honed his documentary photography style in the United States. His work has been featured in Foam, Liberation, Paris Match, Huck Magazine, The New Yorker Photo Booth, and GEO Freitag, among others. His work has been exhibited at Les Rencontre d’Arles in France, as well as in other major cities such as New York City, Miami, Washington, DC, and Caracas. In 2014, he was selected for Plat(t)form at Fotomuseum Winterthur and as an Artist in Residence with Imagine Science Films. He currently lives and works in New York City and Arles, France. Mathieu Asselin holds a Master’s degree from ENSP – École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie d’Arles in France. His book Monsanto®: A Photographic Investigation won the First Photo Book Award at Paris Photo in 2017.

From 24 May to 9 September, 2018 the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt is presenting works by Mathieu Asselin in the exhibition "EXTREME. ENVIRONMENTS" for RAY 2018. In addition, an artist talk by Mathieu Asselin will take place on Friday, 25 May at 4pm in the RAY Festival hub, MMK 3, Domstr. 3, 60311 Frankfurt/Main.

The Workshop will be held in English.

Ein fotografisches Langzeitprojekt zu entwickeln und umzusetzen ist eine große Herausforderung. Der französische Fotograf und Fotokünstler Mathieu Asselin (*1973) hat sich über Jahre hinweg mit dem Chemieriesen Monsanto beschäftigt und die teilweise verheerenden Auswirkungen der Unternehmensaktivitäten fotografisch dokumentiert. Für das daraus entstandene Buch "Monsanto®: A Photographic Investigation" (2017) ist Asselin mehrfach ausgezeichnet und aktuell nominiert für den Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2018. In diesem zweitägigen Workshop im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt stellt der Fotograf seine Erfahrungen auf dem Gebiet der fotografischen Langzeitdokumentation vor. Der Workshop will den Teilnehmern die notwendigen Werkzeuge vermitteln, um ein Projekt über einen längeren Zeitraum zu strukturieren und zu organisieren. Außerdem wird es darum gehen, wie man den thematischen Funken findet, der eine gute Idee ins Rollen bringt. Denn die größte Herausforderung ist, richtig anzufangen.

Mathieu Asselin begann seine Karriere mit der Mitarbeit an Filmproduktionen in Caracas, Venezuela; seinen dokumentarischen Fotografie-Stil entwickelte er in den USA. Seine Arbeiten wurde bisher in Magazinen wie Foam, Liberation, Paris Match, Huck Magazine, The New Yorker Photo Booth und GEO veröffentlicht. Seine Projekte wurden ausgestellt beim Les Rencontre d’Arles in Frankreich, in New York City, Miami, Washington DC, Caracas und anderen Städten. 2014 wurde er für die Plat(t)form am Fotomuseum Winterthur und als Artist in Residence bei Imagine Science Films ausgewählt. Momentan lebt und arbeitet er in New York City und Arles, Frankreich. Mathieu Asselin hat seinen Master an der ENSP – École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie – d'Arles/Frankreich abgeschlossen. Sein Buch Monsanto®: A Photographic Investigation erhielt den First Photo Book Award während Paris Photo 2017. Er ist für den Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2018 nominiert.

Im Rahmen der Fototriennale RAY 2018 EXTREME vom 24. Mai bis 9. September 2018 zeigt das Fotografie Forum Frankfurt Arbeiten von Matthieu Asselin in der Ausstellung "EXTREME. ENVIRONMENTS". Außerdem findet ein Artist Talk mit Mathieu Asselin zum Thema "Monsanto®" am Freitag, 25. Mai 2018, 16 Uhr, im RAY Fesivalzentrum, MMK3, Domstr. 3, 60311 Frankfurt/Main statt.

Der Workshop wird in englischer Sprache gehalten.
