Feminist Avant-garde
Penny Slinger: Promised a Bed of Roses, 1973

The Brno House of Arts presents the international collective exhibition “The Feminist Avant-garde of the 1970s“ comprising over 300 artworks from the Vienna SAMMLUNG VERBUND collection. The exhibition concept is by Gabriele Schor, the founder and director of the collection. Female artists have been disclosing, especially in the last decade, the patriarchal notions of how women are supposed to live, as a social construct. On the basis of the new media such as photography, video and film as well as performance and action art, female artists use their bodies as projection screens for the social code and ask questions regarding self-determination and female identity. The artworks are provocative, radical, poetic and ironic. The exhibition started its journey through Europe in 2010 in the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome and continued to Madrid, Brussels, Halmstadt, Hamburg, London, Karlsruhe and Stavanger. It now has its premiere in the Czech Republic in Brno. This international event seeks to accentuate the pioneering aspect of the “Feminist Avant-garde“ (Gabriele Schor) and to expand the canon of art history. A conference will be held in parallel with the show comparing generation approaches to the female emancipation movement and works inspired by it in the Czech Republic, in western Europe and in the United States.
