At the invitation of the Photoszene Köln, Kölnisches Stadtmuseum, MAKK - Museum of Applied Arts Cologne, Museum Ludwig, Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, Rheinische Bildarchiv Köln and Die Photographische Sammlung/ SK Stiftung Kultur opened their collections and archives for a joint project: Six months ago, six internationally active artists devoted themselves to the convolutes and are now presenting the results of their research in six exciting exhibitions.

Artist and filmmaker Fiona Tan worked with the archive of the Agfa advertising department, which has been packed away in storage at the Museum Ludwig for forty years - tens of thousands of photographs, slides, and negatives. The artist is particularly interested in the promotional photos taken with the legendary Agfacolor film. In Dutch, the title of the exhibition GAAF — an anagram of Agfa — means "neat" or "perfect" and alludes to the colorful, staged world of the photographs, which show the euphoria of the postwar "economic miracle" in Germany.

In the exhibition, the Finnish artist Ola Kolehmainen engages with the duality of the medium of photography as a haptic object with its very own aesthetic on the one hand, and as an information carrier on the other. His selection is comprised of shots of sacred Cologne architecture and its treasury art, with the aspects of light, space and colour playing a crucial role. At the centre stands an elaborate installation, which examines the construction history of Cologne Cathedral.

The Israeli artist Ronit Porat (*1975 in Kibbutz Kfar Giadi, Northern Israel, lives in Tel Aviv) deals with the question of how archives create history and sometimes interweaves archive material with biographical texts. For several weeks, the Israeli artist Ronit Porat immersed herself in the Graphics Collection of the Cologne City Museum and embarked upon an imaginary journey there. Her focus: Picture postcards from the years 1918 to 1938. Employing her collage-like, sometimes Dadaist photomontage method, she allowed new narratives to arise and historical boundaries to become visible.

With the exhibition "Archive Land" the Dutch artist Erik Kessels opens the hitherto unpublicized template collection of the MAKK. A kind of encyclopaedic image archive, it once served as a guide to artistic designs for the Fine and Applied Arts. Kessels will use the (photo)graphic plates, which recall oversized playing cards, to build ruins for a walk-through room installation and create a temporary "dig site". A sound installation by the British artist Robin Rimbaud alias SCANNER translates the archive into sound.

In the exhibition "NOISY IMAGES", Belgian artist Antje Van Wichelen investigates the mechanisms of colonial photography. To do this, she conducted research in the Historical Photographic Archive at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum. Her examination of this material has given rise to installations that overcome the classifying gaze: Van Wichelen translates photographic document into moving image, places the shots in direct relation to the beholders and calls on them to conduct their own research. She thereby enables a wholly new view of the images.

The artist Roselyne Titaud has selected both single motifs and partial bundles from the stock of the Photographic Collection and placed them in an associative dialogue with her own motifs. Cross-temporal correspondences, occasionally of a surreal appearance, form a visual round of both black-and-white shots and colour prints of various formats and appearances. This exhibition, which can be seen from 4 May, is complemented by the presentation "Roselyne Titaud – Géographies des limites humaines".

The festival throughout the city

In addition to the exhibitions of the Artist Meets Archive project, over 70 other museums and institutions, galleries and art spaces are participating in a photography exhibition throughout the city, including the Käthe Kollwitz Museum, tForum für Fotografie, established galleries such as Parrotta Contemporary Art, Julian Sander and Bene Taschen as well as studios and art spaces such as the Kunststation Sankt Peter, DYNAMITE, KunstWerk Köln e.V., BAYENWERFT KUNSTHAUS RHENANIA eV and Atelier Gumprecht.

The festival will be accompanied by a guide that gives an overview of the more than 70 exhibitions and the supporting program as well as by the magazine L.Fritz, which deals in detail with the Artist Meets Archive exhibitions. An app of "rausgegangen" guides all visitors on a mobile journey to the Photoszene exhibitions in the Cologne city area.

Framework program in cooperation with DGPh

A varied and concerted supporting program at the MAKK - Museum of Applied Art Cologne accompanies the exhibitions, including the Fotobuch-Quartett+ this time with Bettina Flitner as special guest (8 May in the MAKK), a panel discussion with photographers, the events around the Hambacher Forst (9 May in the MAKK), the legendary Photographer's Night under the title "The Art of Documentary Photography" with the photographers Michael Wolf and Ute and Werner Mahler (10 May), the fotobus of Christoph Bangert, where the students of the FH Dortmund show their work (10 + 11 May) and the Dr. med. Erich Salomon Award ceremony of the DGPh to Stephanie Sinclair (11 May).

In addition, in cooperation with the KHM and the DGPh, the symposium "Photographic Materials: Archives and Tools" will take place on 3 and 4 May in the KHM - Academy of Media Arts Cologne, which is free for students.

Das Kernprogramm: Artist Meets Archive

Auf Einladung der Photoszene Köln öffneten das Kölnische Stadtmuseum, das MAKK - Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln, das Museum Ludwig, das Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum, das Rheinische Bildarchiv Köln und Die Photographische Sammlung / SK Stiftung Kultur ihre Sammlungen und Archive für ein gemeinsames Projekt: Vor knapp einem halben Jahr haben sich sechs international agierende Künstler den Konvoluten gewidmet und präsentieren nun die Ergebnisse ihrer Recherchen in sechs spannenden Ausstellungen.

Die Künstlerin und Filmemacherin Fiona Tan hat sich mit dem Agfa-Werbearchiv auseinandergesetzt, das seit vierzig Jahren im Museum Ludwig schlummert – Zehntausende Fotografien, Dias und Negative. Die Künstlerin interessieren die Werbeaufnahmen mit dem legendären „Agfacolor“-Film. GAAF ist ein Anagramm von Agfa und heißt im Niederländischen "astrein" oder "makellos" und spielt auf die bunte, gestellte Welt der Aufnahmen an, denen die Euphorie der Wirtschaftswunderjahre anzusehen ist.

In der Ausstellung beschäftigt sich der finnische Künstler Ola Kolehmainen mit der Dualität des Mediums Fotografie als haptisches Objekt mit seiner ganz eigenen Ästhetik auf der einen und als Informationsträger auf der anderen Seite. Ausgewählt wurden Aufnahmen sakraler Kölner Architektur und ihrer Schatzkunst, wobei die Aspekte Licht, Raum und Farbe eine entscheidende Rolle spielen. Im Zentrum steht eine aufwendige Installation, die sich mit der Baugeschichte des Kölners Doms auseinandersetzt.

Die israelische Künstlerin Ronit Porat (*1975 im Kibbutz Kfar Giadi, Nord-Israel, lebt in Tel Aviv) setzt sich in ihrer Arbeit mit der Frage auseinander, wie Archive Geschichte entstehen lassen und verwebt Archivmaterial bisweilen mit biografischen Texten. Für das Projekt tauchte sie mehrere Wochen in die Graphische Sammlung des Kölnischen Stadtmuseums ein und begab sich auf eine imaginäre Reise. In ihrem Fokus: Bildpostkarten aus den Jahren 1918 bis 1938. Mit ihrer collageartigen, teilweise dadaistischen Fotomontage-Methode lässt sie neue Erzählungen entstehen und historische Grenzen sichtbar werden.

Mit der Ausstellung "Archive Land" öffnet der niederländische Künstler Erik Kessels die bis dato unveröffentlichte Vorlagensammlung des MAKK. Als eine Art enzyklopädisches Bildarchiv diente sie als Leitfaden der künstlerischen Gestaltungen für die Bildenden und Angewandten Künste. Als überdimensionale Spielkarten wird Kessels die (foto)grafischen Platten als Ruinen zu einer begehbaren Rauminstallation verbauen und eine temporäre "Ausgrabungsstätte" schaffen. Eine Klanginstallation des britischen Künstlers Robin Rimbaud alias SCANNER übersetzt das Archiv in Klang.

In der Ausstellung NOISY IMAGES fragt die belgische Künstlerin Antje Van Wichelen nach den Mechanismen kolonialer Fotografie. Dazu hat sie im Historischen Fotoarchiv im Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum recherchiert. Aus der Beschäftigung mit diesem Material sind Installationen entstanden, die den klassifizierenden Blick überwinden: Van Wichelen überführt das fotografische Dokument in Bewegtbild, setzt die Aufnahmen in direkten Bezug zu den Betrachtenden und fordert diese zu eigener Recherche auf. Sie ermöglicht damit eine völlig neue Sicht auf die Bilder.

Roselyne Titaud hat aus dem Bestand der Photographischen Sammlung Einzelmotive wie Teilkonvolute ausgewählt und diese mit eigenen Motiven in einen assoziativen Dialog gesetzt. Zeitübergreifende Korrespondenzen, bisweilen surrealer Anmutung, bilden einen visuellen Reigen von Schwarz-Weiß-Aufnahmen wie Farbabzügen verschiedener Formate und Konnotationen. Diese, ab 4. Mai zu sehende Ausstellung, flankiert die Präsentation "Roselyne Titaud - Géographies des limites humaines".

Das Festival in der gesamten Stadt

Neben den Ausstellungen des Artist Meets Archive-Projektes beteiligen sich über 70 weitere Museen und Institutionen, Galerien und Kunsträume an einem Ausstellungsparcours zur Fotografie im gesamten Stadtgebiet, darunter das Käthe Kollwitz Museum, das Forum für Fotografie, etablierte Galerien wie Parrotta Contemporary Art oder Julian Sander und Bene Taschen sowie Ateliers und Kunsträumen wie die Kunst-Station Sankt Peter, DYNAMITE, KunstWerk Köln e.V., BAYENWERFT KUNSTHAUS RHENANIA e.V. und das Atelier Gumprecht.

Zum Festival erscheint ein Guide, der einen Überblick zu den mehr als 70 Ausstellungen und dem Rahmenprogramm gibt sowie das Magazin L.Fritz, das sich mit den Artist Meets Archive-Ausstellungen eingehend auseinandersetzt. Eine App von "rausgegangen" leitet alle Besucher auf mobilem Weg zu den Photoszene-Ausstellungen im Kölner Stadtgebiet.

Rahmenprogramm in Kooperation mit der DGPh

Ein vielseitiges und konzertiertes Rahmenprogramm im MAKK – Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln begleitet die Ausstellungen, darunter das Fotobuch-Quartett+ diesmal mit Bettina Flitner als Special-Guest (8. Mai im MAKK), eine Podiumsdiskussion mit Fotografen, die die Ereignisse rund um den Hambacher Forst festgehalten haben (9. Mai im MAKK), die legendäre Photographer’s Night unter dem Titel "Die Kunst der Dokumentarfotografie" mit den Fotografen Michael Wolf sowie Ute und Werner Mahler (10. Mai), der fotobus von Christoph Bangert, in dem Studenten der FH Dortmund ihre Arbeiten zeigen (10. +11. Mai) und die Dr. Erich Salomon Preisverleihung der DGPh an Stephanie Sinclair (11. Mai).

Zudem findet in Zusammenarbeit mit der KHM und der DGPh am 3. und 4. Mai das Symposium "Photographic Materials: Archives and Tools" in der KHM – Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln statt, das für Studenten kostenfrei ist.
