We rarely encounter a photographic image unaccompanied, but rather as an integral part of a broader arrangement of media. What tended to be confined to text-image constellations in the era of print media has increasingly morphed and expanded into hybrid assemblages comprising a wide variety of image, text and audiovisual materials sourced from diverse contexts and displayed simultaneously on our screens and digital platforms. Yet, while our culture is becoming increasingly visual, its foundations remain textually coded – be it through the zeros and ones of the binary code or through the metadata and algorithms inscribed in photographs that determine the circulation of the images as well as the arrangements in which they appear. SITUATIONS/Photo Text Data explores contemporary variations of text and image and the tensions in between that determine not only what we see but how we see it.

SITUATIONS is an experimental exhibition format that reacts dynamically to current photographic and cultural developments. A SITUATION may take the form of a photographic image, a video or a performance, an essay or quote aimed at an in-depth exploration of a topic. Numbered consecutively, SITUATIONS are presented as thematic clusters in the physical space and online at situations.fotomuseum.ch.

Ein fotografisches Bild begegnet uns oft als Bestandteil medialer Arrangements. Was sich in Zeiten der Printmedien noch auf Text-Bild-Konstellationen bechränkte, hat sich auf unseren Screens und digitalen Plattformen zunehmend zu hybriden Assemblagen weiterentwickelt, in denen verschiedenste Bild- und Textsorten sowie audiovisuelle Materialien aus unterschiedlichsten Kontexten auf ein und demselben Display zusammenfinden. Während unsere Kultur zunehmend visuell wird, bleibt ihre Grundlage textlich codiert – über die Nullen und Einsen des digitalen Codes, oder über die den Fotografien eingeschriebenen Metadaten und Algorithmen. Diese bestimmen letztlich über die Zirkulation der Bilder und darüber, wie und in welchen Arrangements sie erscheinen und was sie zu Erscheinen geben. SITUATIONS/Foto Text Data befragt das Spannungsfeld von Text und Bild in ihren zeitgenössischen Spielformen und ihrem Ringen darum, wer den Rahmen gibt und die Deutungshoheit übernimmt.

SITUATIONS ist ein experimentelles Ausstellungsformat, das dynamisch auf aktuelle fotografische und kulturelle Entwicklungen reagiert. Eine SITUATION kann ein fotografisches Bild, ein Video oder eine Performance sein, ein Essay oder ein Zitat zur thematischen Vertiefung. SITUATIONS werden laufend durchnummeriert und in thematischen Clustern im physischen Raum und auf situations.fotomuseum.ch präsentiert.
