A legendary photo book, a private photo collection, and three former assistants – these are the ingredients for the new exhibition at the Helmut Newton Foundation. Twenty years ago in 1999, TASCHEN published its first monumental art book: "Helmut Newton’s SUMO". It came out on the market in the exceptionally large format of 70 x 50 cm, in a print run of 10,000 copies, all personally signed by the photographer, and was delivered with a metal stand designed by Philippe Starck. Later, a copy of "SUMO" that had been signed by numerous celebrities at a charity auction would become the most expensive book of the 20th century.

Ten years ago in 2009, the Helmut Newton Foundation staged an unusual yet compelling exhibition dedicated to this legendary publication: all 464 pages of the book hung framed on the wall, side by side, in three rows one above the other. Exhibition visitors were literally able to see everything at once. This made it possible for them to draw immediate comparisons between more than 400 iconic images by Helmut Newton, from the genres of fashion, portraiture, and nudes in black-and-white and colour. Now, a decade later and 20 years after its creation, "SUMO" will once again be presented at the Helmut Newton Foundation. At this exhibition in Berlin as in the book, we encounter Newton’s famous Big Nudes, fashion shots for various editions of Vogue, Elle, Stern, and Vanity Fair, as well as portraits of famous actresses and artists, such as Liz Taylor, Jodie Foster, Salvador Dalí, and Andy Warhol.

Newton’s "SUMO" exhibition is complemented by an expanded reprise of the "Three Boys from Pasadena". Ten years ago, the works of three of Newton’s former assistants – Mark Arbeit, George Holz, and Just Loomis – were featured all together in one of the foundation’s exhibition rooms. For this new exhibition, each of these American photographers will have a dedicated space for his unique and multifaceted oeuvre. Mark Arbeit will show a new series of life-sized photograms of female models along with a series of small-format photograms of toy dolls – a visual homage to Helmut Newton and his passion for collecting. Joining the black-and-white nudes by George Holz from the previous exhibition will be a host of his Hollywood portraits – including of Madonna, Andie MacDowell, Jack Nicholson, and Steven Spielberg – many of which have appeared in well-known magazines. And Just Loomis has selected some of his "Backstage" works to complement his "Americana" series from the exhibition in 2009. With "Backstage", Loomis gives us an intimate flipside-view of the glamorous fashion business – the concentration, frenzy, and intense emotional energy of the models behind the catwalk.

For the first time on public display is the exquisite private photo collection of Helmut and June Newton, which has recently come into the care of the Helmut Newton Foundation. In "June’s Room" – parallel to "SUMO" and "Three Boys from Pasadena" – there are now over 50 valuable vintage prints in their original frames. These include portraits by August Sander, Brassaï, Ralph Gibson, Mary Ellen Mark, Irving Penn, and George Hurrell; nudes by Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Frantisek Drtikol, Diane Arbus, and Chris von Wangenheim; fashion photos by Horst P. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, and Richard Avedon; and landscapes by Franco Fontana and Peter Beard. In short, this is a selection of the most important photographers of the 20th century.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the reissued version of "Helmut Newton's SUMO" book (TASCHEN, 2009) will be available at the Walther-König bookstore at the Helmut Newton Foundation.

Ein legendäres Fotobuch, eine private Fotosammlung und drei ehemalige Assistenten: Das sind die Zutaten für die neue Ausstellung in der Helmut Newton Stiftung. 1999, vor 20 Jahren, veröffentlichte der TASCHEN-Verlag sein erstes monumentales Kunstbuch: Helmut Newton’s SUMO. Es kam in einem ungewöhnlich großen Format von 70 x 50 cm auf den Markt, in einer Auflage von 10.000 Exemplaren, alle vom Fotografen persönlich signiert, und wurde mit einem von Philippe Starck entworfenen Metallständer ausgeliefert. Etwas später wurde der von zahlreichen Prominenten signierte SUMO auf einer Charity-Auktion zum teuersten Buch des 20. Jahrhundert.

2009, vor zehn Jahren, organisierte die Helmut Newton Stiftung eine ungewöhnliche, gewissermaßen adäquate Ausstellung zu dieser legendären Publikation: die 460 Buchseiten hingen gerahmt an der Wand, Seite an Seite, in drei Reihen übereinander. Der Besucher konnte in der Ausstellung sprichwörtlich alles auf einmal sehen. Die mehr als 400 ikonischen Bilder von Newton aus den Genres Mode, Porträt und Akt in Schwarz-Weiß und Farbe konnten so individuell und gleichzeitig miteinander in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Nun, erneut zehn Jahre später und 20 Jahre nach dessen Entstehung, wird SUMO erneut in der Helmut Newton Stiftung präsentiert: Wir begegnen im Buch und in der Berliner Ausstellung unter anderem Newtons berühmten Big Nudes, vielen Modebildern für die unterschiedlichen Ausgaben der Vogue, für Elle, Stern oder Vanity Fair sowie Porträts von bekannten Schauspielerinnen oder Künstlern, darunter Liz Taylor und Jodie Foster oder Salvador Dalí und Andy Warhol.

Ergänzt wird Newtons SUMO-Ausstellung durch die erweiterte Präsentation der "Three Boys from Pasadena". Während vor zehn Jahren die drei ehemaligen Assistenten von Helmut Newton – Mark Arbeit, George Holz und Just Loomis – mit jeweils einer oder mehrerer Werkgruppen innerhalb eines Ausstellungsraumes gezeigt wurden, wird nun jedem der drei amerikanischen Fotografen, die mittlerweile ein eigenständiges und vielschichtiges Œuvre geschaffen haben, ein eigener Raum zur Verfügung gestellt.

Mark Arbeit ergänzt als neue Serien lebensgroße Fotogramme von weiblichen Modellen sowie kleinformatige Fotogramme von Spielzeug-Puppen, die als Hommage an Helmut Newton und seine Sammelleidenschaft zu verstehen sind. George Holz zeigt – neben den Schwarz-Weiß-Aktbildern der früheren Ausstellung – zahlreiche seiner bekannten Hollywood-Porträts, darunter Madonna, Andie MacDowell, Jack Nicholson oder Steven Spielberg, von denen viele zuvor in renommierten Zeitschriften und auf deren Titelseiten publiziert wurden. Just Loomis schließlich hat einige seiner "Backstage"-Arbeiten ausgewählt, die seine "Americana"-Serie aus der Berliner Ausstellung 2009 ergänzen. Mit "Backstage" zeigt uns Loomis die andere Seite des strahlenden Modebusiness, die Konzentration und Hektik vor dem Auftritt auf dem Laufsteg, aber auch Emotionen unterschiedlicher Art.

Erstmals wird auch die exquisite private Fotosammlung von Helmut und June Newton öffentlich gezeigt, die sich seit kurzem als Depositum in der Helmut Newton Stiftung befindet. In "June’s Room" hängen – parallel zu "SUMO" und "Three Boys from Pasadena" – nun über 50 wertvolle Vintage Prints in der originalen Rahmung, darunter Porträts von August Sander, Brassaï, Ralph Gibson, Mary Ellen Mark, Irving Penn oder George Hurrell, Aktbilder von Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Frantisek Drtikol, Diane Arbus und Chris von Wangenheim, Modeaufnahmen von Horst P. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, Richard Avedon sowie Landschaften von Franco Fontana und Peter Beard – kurzum, eine Auswahl der bedeutendsten Fotografen des 20. Jahrhunderts.
