The Dr. Erich Salomon Award of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh) was established in 1971 to honor outstanding use of photography in press. It celebrates the memory of the great photographer of the Weimar Republic, Dr. Erich Salomon, whom many regard as the principal founder of modern photojournalism.

The award comprises a certificate and a Leica M Camera, engraved with the name of the recipient. It is presented every year, alongside the Cultural Award, as the highest distinction of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh).

Among the award winners are magazines, organizations and television as well as persons who have done photography a great service in publications or who have excelled as photojournalists.


Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh) freut sich ganz besonders, ihren renommierten Dr. Erich Salomon-Preis in diesem Jahr an die US-amerikanische Bildjournalistin Stephanie Sinclair zu vergeben. Sinclair visualisiert bewegend das weltweite Leid von Mädchen und jungen Frauen, die Opfer von Gewalt geworden sind.

Die DGPh ehrt damit die Arbeiten einer Photojournalistin, die in der Tradition der humanistischen Photographie seit langem eine herausragende Position besitzen. Die Verleihung des Preises findet am 11. Mai um 19 Uhr im Museum für Angewandte Kunst im Rahmen des Festivals der Internationalen Photoszene Köln statt. Die Laudatio hält Lars Boering, der Direktor der World Press Photo Foundation.
