Beijing-based artist WANG Qingsong (1966~ ) has revealed the truth of society, the hidden reality behind splendid culture and accused China’s upheaval society since its 1978 open door policy through his unique perspective. From the early photography works of 1990s to today, his works has consistently talked about the social dilemmas that China currently experiences. Since turning his medium from painting to photography in the late 1990s, WANG Qingsong has digitally synthesized images of himself. After 2000s he has taken shoot of crowds, creates an exaggerated situation as if it were a stage scene. As a key artist in looking at the present of Chinese photography, he is the one who has combined installation art and performance in photography field and gave a great impact on 1990s Chinese photographic scene, which documentary photography was the only genre.
The Museum of Photography, Seoul (MoPS) presents WANG’s solo exhibition The Glorious Life which shows his art work path over the past 20 years. From the 1997 works to now, MoPS will exhibit selected works that will allow to read WANG’s work context as dense as possible. Furthermore this show aims to review his artistic perspective which he has consistently focused on, examine the current status of modern China society and predict the vision of contemporary Chinese photography.
