Moriyama was born in Osaka in October, 1938. While actively working as a designer, Moriyama moved to Tokyo in 1961 to pursue his career in photography. After working as an assistant of Hosoe Eikou, he shifted to become a freelance photographer.
His unique style that emphasized sensibility of "are bure boke" (rough, blurred, out-of-focus) collected enormous attention globally, and he has since received numerous awards, including Photographic Society of Japan Newcomer’s Award. In 2019, he became a fourth Japanese photographer to be awarded The Hasselblad
International Award in Photography, which is considered a "Nobel Prize of photography."
Starting with Ango - the series of photographs Moriyama shot based on Sakaguchi Ango’s short story, In the Forest, Under Cherries in Full Bloom - this exhibition will carry number of works that have not been previously exhibited. We cordially invite you to view, and experience this wonderful series of works. We look forward to seeing you at our venue.
