2019 the Museum Kunst der Westküste celebrates its tenth birthday with two ambitious exhibitions. ’10 Years of MKdW – Masterpieces’ presents around 100 highlights from the collection with its unique focus on the motifs of the ‘sea & coast’ together with more than 50 masterpieces from the four North Sea border states, whose art has been on display at the museum for ten years: the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and across Germany. In this way, the museum presents a century of painting, from Romanticism to Modernism.

In this anniversary year, the Museum Kunst der Westküste is again devoting attention to contemporary art by assembling exciting artistic practices in photography under the title ‘10 Years of MKdW – Contemporary’. The artists each represent their home country: one of the four countries of the West Coast. Within this context, the photographic works enter into a dialogue with the collection’s paintings and prints from Romanticism to modernism.

In their photographic works, the Dane Joakim Eskildsen, the German artist Anja Jensen, Ellen Kooi of the Netherlands and the Norwegian Mette Tronvoll establish links to motifs from the masterpieces and direct attention to the people who live in the coastal landscapes.

At the same time, the character of the works is neither clearly observational nor staged; instead, the photographs develop their intense visual effect at the intersection between the two. Regarding the images’ subject matter and selection of details, on the other hand, the overview reveals similar elements among them – as well as unexpected similarities to the paintings, oil sketches and works on paper that can be seen in the exhibition ‘10 Years of MKdW’.

The exhibition presents works from Joakim Eskildsen’s series 'Skagen', which is already part of the collection and is now being complemented by additional images. Like Eskildsen, Anja Jensen has already exhibited her work in Alkersum on Föhr as an artist in residence, and she presents photographic works created on the island last year. By contrast, the art of Ellen Kooi and Mette Tronvoll is being shown at the MKdW for the first time.

Das Museum Kunst der Westküste feiert in diesem Jahr sein zehnjähriges Bestehen mit zwei bedeutenden Jubiläumsausstellungen. Die Ausstellung "10 Jahre MKdW – Meisterwerke" präsentiert rund 100 Highlights der Sammlung mit ihrem einzigartigen Fokus auf den Bildthemen "Meer & Küste" sowie über 50 Leihgaben aus jenen vier Westküstenländern, deren Kunst seit zehn Jahren im Museum gezeigt wird: Niederlande, Deutschland, Dänemark und Norwegen. Damit umfasst die Ausstellung ein Jahrhundert Malerei, von der Romantik bis zur Moderne.

Unter dem Titel "10 Jahre MKdW – Contemporary" widmet sich das MKdW aber auch im Jubiläumsjahr wieder der zeitgenössischen Kunst. Gezeigt werden spannende fotografische Positionen von vier KünstlerInnen, die jeweils ihr Heimatland – eines der vier Westküstenländer – vertreten. Dabei ergibt sich zwischen Ihren Werken und der Malerei und Grafik der Sammlung ein anregender Dialog.

Der Däne Joakim Eskildsen, die deutsche Künstlerin Anja Jensen, Ellen Kooi aus den Niederlanden und die Norwegerin Mette Tronvoll knüpfen in ihren Fotoarbeiten an die Motivik der "Meisterwerke" an und richten den Blick auf die in den Küstenlandschaften lebenden Menschen.

Der Charakter der Werke ist dabei nicht eindeutig beobachtend oder inszeniert: die Fotografien entfalten ihre intensive Bildwirkung im Dazwischen. Im Hinblick auf Bildthema und -ausschnitt wiederum tritt in der Überschau untereinander Vergleichbares zutage – sowie unerwartete Ähnlichkeiten mit den Gemälden, Ölskizzen und Grafiken aus der Ausstellung "10 Jahre MKdW – Meisterwerke".

In der Ausstellung werden Werke aus Joakim Eskildsens Serie "Skagen" gezeigt, die teilweise bereits zur Sammlung gehören, teilweise eigens zusätzlich produziert werden. Anja Jensen, die wie Eskildsen bereits als Artist-in-Residence in Alkersum ausgestellt hat, ist mit Fotoarbeiten vertreten, die im vergangenen Jahr auf Föhr entstanden. Die Kunst von Ellen Kooi und Mette Tronvoll ist hingegen erstmalig im MKdW zu sehen.
