"FLUX" is a series of shifting photographic artworks that embody silhouettes that are warped by textile, saturated in colors and a medley of motifs. Each frame is uniquely upholstered with wax print sourced from Cote d’Ivoire. While some of the images distort visibility, others create hypervisibility almost negating themselves into animated forms of camouflage.

The outburst of saturated colors and hyperoptic motifs in these images, lend themselves to vibrating results obscuring the complex and sometimes iniquitous conditions by which these textiles came into fruition and destabilizing the source(s) from where they came from. The multiple dimensionality creates a kaleidoscope of perspectives, horizontally and vertically. Horizontally, in that this material has come into existence across borders over land and water, and vertically in that they draw from and evoke cosmic, mythical and religious inspirations. Furthermore, these particular wax prints are a key to mapping the colonial trade routes. While they certainly can be seen as escapist dreamscapes, they are also objects of oppression and capitalism.

Alia Ali (Austria, 1985) is a Yemeni-Bosnian-American multi-media artist. She is a graduate of the United World College of the Atlantic (UWCAC) and holds a BA in Studio Art and Middle Eastern Studies from Wellesley College. She is currently finishing her Master of Fine Arts at CalTec, Los Angeles. She has been awarded the Alice C. Cole '42 Grant of Wellesley College, LensCulture’s Emerging Talent Awards 2016 and Gold Winner in a Fine Art Category of the Tokyo International Photo Awards. Alia has exhibited internationally in museums, fairs and festivals including PhotoLondon 2019 in the UK, 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Morocco, Art Karlsruhe in Germany, the Lianzhou Photo Festival in China, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in the Netherlands, the Katzen Museum of Art in Washington DC, The Contemporary Art Center in New Orleans, and the Kuala Lumpur Photo Festival in Malaysia. Alia has presented lectures and workshops at Harvard University, the LACMA, the Middle East Institute, Gulf Photo Plus and the Arab American Museum.

Die Multimediakünstlerin Alia Ali richtet in ihrer Serie "FLUX" den Blick auf das Textil als ein Medium, in dem Politik, Wirtschaft und Geschichte aufeinandertreffen. "FLUX" ist eine Serie von Fotografien, auf denen mit farbigen, stark gemusterten Stoffe verhüllte Silhouetten zu sehen sind. Jeder Rahmen ist von der Künstlerin mit einem Wax Print aus der Elfenbeinküste bezogen. Während einige der Bilder fast abstrakt wirken, erzeugen andere eine beinahe animierte Form der Tarnung.

Die Explosion von Farben und Motiven in diesen Bildern spiegelt zugleich die komplexen und manchmal unheilvollen Bedingungen, unter denen diese Textilien sich verbreiteten. Ihre Mehrdimensionalität erzeugt ein Kaleidoskop von Perspektiven, horizontal wie vertikal. Horizontal, weil diese Stoffe ihren Weg zu uns über Grenzen, über Land und Wasser hinweg gefunden haben, vertikal, weil sie aus kosmischen, mythischen und religiösen Quellen schöpfen. Darüber hinaus sind die westafrikanischen Wax Prints ein Schlüssel zur Kartierung kolonialer Handelsrouten. Sie können zwar als Traumlandschaften betrachtet werden, sind aber zugleich Objekte der Unterdrückung und des Kapitalismus.

Alia Ali, geb. 1985, ist eine jemenitisch-bosnisch-amerikanische Multimediakünstlerin. Sie ist Absolventin des United World College of the Atlantic und hat am Wellesley College Kunst studiert. Zur Zeit schließt sie ihre Studien mit einem Master of Fine Arts am California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles ab. Sie stellt international aus, zuletzt in der Galerie Siniya 28 in Marrakesch, bei Gulf Photo Plus in Dubai, in verschiedenen Galerien und Museen in den USA, beim Lianzhou Photo Festival in China, am Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in den Niederlanden, im Katzen Museum of Art in Washington DC und beim Kuala Lumpur Photo Festival in Malaysia. Alia Ali hat Vorträge und Workshops an der Harvard University, am LACMA, dem Middle East Institute, bei Gulf Photo Plus und am Arab American Museum gehalten. 2020 wird sie u.a. im New Orleans Museum of Art, im Benton Museum of Art und bei der CAFKA Biennale ausstellen. Alia Ali lebt und arbeitet in Los Angeles und Marrakesch.
