The tourist season is over, the promenade is empty and Brexit is at the door when Benita Suchodrev returns to the British coastal town of Blackpool to photograph the hidden reality behind the famous Amusement Mile. She leads us to local churches, soup kitchens, youth shelters, old age homes and impoverished neighborhoods, meets bizarre characters, underage mothers, drug-addicts, artists, and hermits. She photographs strangers on train platforms, homeless in torn rags feasting on ham sandwiches and coffee under a dark overpass, closed storefronts and deserted alleys on a rainy night. Poetic, rough and authentic, Of Lions and Lambs is a sequel to Suchodrev’s successful debut 48 Hours Blackpool (Kehrer Verlag 2018), the sequel to a story that begins where illusions end.

"By contrast with my first book, 48 Hours Blackpool, whose swift, brutally honest depictions of British tourists rushing along the amusement mile inadvertently lived up to the popular notion of Blackpool as a ‘playground for the British working class’, this book is more about Blackpool as a dying ground for those whose class does not matter. For the most part, it’s about those who live in a contemporary Western society and, for a reason that may or may not exist, seem to carry on their shoulders every conceivable physical, mental and emotional burden, including the burden of guilt for their own demise… in this context I can’t help think of lambs that are sacrificed again and again, continuously slaughtered to die many deaths and be reborn only to die again, even while living. Their children are the tenderest of lambs that are served on dinner plates following inauguration speeches. Die touristische Saison ist vorbei, die Promenade ist leer und der Brexit steht vor der Tür, als Benita Suchodrev in die britische Küstenstadt Blackpool zurückkehrt, um die verborgene Realität hinter der berühmten Vergnügungsmeile zu fotografieren. Sie führt uns in lokale Kirchen, Suppenküchen, Jugendunterkünfte, Altersheime und verarmte Viertel, trifft auf bizarre Gestalten, minderjährige Mütter, Drogenabhängige, Künstler und Eremiten. Sie fotografiert Fremde auf Bahnsteigen, Obdachlose in zerrissenen Lumpen, die sich unter einer dunklen Überführung an Schinkensandwich und Kaffee erfreuen, verrammelte Ladenfronten und verlassene Gassen in einer regnerischen Nacht. Poetisch, rau und authentisch ist Of Lions and Lambs die Fortsetzung von Suchodrevs erfolgreichem Debüt 48 Hours Blackpool (Kehrer Verlag 2018), die Fortsetzung einer Geschichte, die dort beginnt, wo Illusionen enden.

"Im Gegensatz zu meinem ersten Buch, 48 Hours Blackpool, dessen schnelle, schonungslos ehrliche Aufnahmen von über die Vergnügungsmeile hetzenden britischen Touristen unbeabsichtigt dem verbreiteten Bild von Blackpool als 'Spielplatz der britischen Arbeiterklasse' entsprachen, handelt dieses Buch eher von Blackpool als Sterbeplatz für diejenigen, deren Klasse keine Rolle spielt. Es dreht sich im Wesentlichen um Menschen, die in einer modernen westlichen Gesellschaft leben und aus Gründen, die existieren mögen oder nicht, jede nur denkbare körperliche, seelische und emotionale Last auf ihren Schultern tragen, einschließlich der Last des selbst verschuldeten Niedergangs ... in diesem Kontext muss ich unwillkürlich an Lämmer denken, die wieder und wieder geopfert, die kontinuierlich geschlachtet werden, um viele Tode zu sterben und bloß wiedergeboren zu werden, um erneut zu sterben, selbst im Leben.
