Christie’s Paris presents Man Ray et les surréalistes, Collection Lucien et Edmonde Treillard on March 2, 2021 at 2pm. The personal collection of Man Ray’s last assistant includes objects, photographs, books, manuscripts and lithographs, offering a complete and unique panorama of Man Ray’s creation.
This exceptional sale, made up of 188 lots, will highlight the universe of Man Ray through the unique collection of the man who worked with him until the end of his life : Lucien Treillard, who became his assistant in 1960. A group of 96 photographs will be presented in this sale and perfectly illustrate the diversity of Man Ray’s practice. Images of iconic personalities such as Lee Miller, Jean Cocteau or Dora Maar rub shoulders with the portraits of many artists such as Dalí, Giacometti, Miro and Pablo Picasso. Light will also be shed on the diversity of techniques used by the artist, such as the rayogram that Man Ray discovered by accident in 1922 and which fascinates and inspires surrealists. A highlight of the sale is a rare version of La Boite en Valise from Marcel Duchamp. A set of objects, underlining the humor and surrealist character of Man Ray’s work, will also be offered at this sale, as the 1935 work A quoi rêvent les jeunes (What Young people dream about); or Ce qui nous manque à tous (What we all lack), an object designed in 1927. Finally, the Lucien and Edmonde Treillard collection will also offer a section dedicated to books and manuscripts, which will notably include one of the very first book illustrated by Man Ray, A Book of Divers Writings by Adon Lacroix.
