"THE MYSTERIOUS WORLD"

Polish artist Natalia LL has gained international success since the 1970s with the picture series "Consumer Art" and "Post-Consumer Art". The series depict young women licking and sucking foods like bananas, sausages, and pudding with relish. These works were appropriated by feminist art from the beginning. To this day, they are presented in many exhibitions on corporeality, gender, and sexuality.

The exhibition at the FC - Francisco Carolinum displays examples of these series and places them in the context of an œuvre that developed over a good five decades from the 1960s to the 2010s. The exhibition starts with the early works, which are influenced by conceptual art and address language and time. Photography, film and performance are the artist’s preferred media.

Born Natalia Lach, she gets married to artist and theorist Andrzej Lachowicz (1939 – 2015) in 1964. Until her photo series "Transfiguration of Odin" from 2009, he is one of her models. Together, they are founding members of the influential artist collective Permafo Gallery (Permanent Formalization) in Wroclaw, which was the birthplace of neo-avant-garde and conceptual art in Poland between 1970 and 1981. The artist breaks with the norms of conceptual art very early on. She thematizes eroticism, as well as strong feelings and emotions. Art is a state of consciousness to her. She focuses on sleep and dreams, on universal interconnectedness; on topics that are not easily accessible through reason. She performs spiritual initiations, slips into the role of priestess, goddess, and master of ceremonies, and positions herself within constellations. A range of films and photo series provide insight into this period.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the artist explores Plato’s ideas on symmetrical and geometric solids. She also discovers Wagner and the cosmology of the Norse mythology of the Edda. Transfiguration and the transformation of the body into a celestial being become central motifs in her work.

The artist’s complete work, encompassing roughly 5 decades, was presented to the public only in 2015, in the context of the exhibition Secretum et Tremor in the Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw. "The Mysterious World – Natalia LL" is the first survey exhibition in a museum outside of Poland.

Natalia Lach - Lachowicz was born in 1937 in Żywiec, Poland, and studied graphic arts, painting, and glass design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw from 1957 to 1963. Today she lives in Wroclaw, Poland.

Die polnische Künstlerin Natalia LL ist seit den 1970er Jahren mit den Bildserien "Consumer Art" und "Post-Consumer Art" international bekannt geworden. Die Serien zeigen junge Frauen, die genussvoll an Nahrungsmitteln, wie Bananen, Würsten oder Pudding schlecken und lutschen. Von Beginn an wurden diese Werke von feministischer Kunst vereinnahmt. Sie werden bis in die Gegenwart in vielen Ausstellungen zur Körperlichkeit, Gender und Sexualität präsentiert.

Die Ausstellung im FC – Francisco Carolinum zeigt Beispiele dieser Serien und stellt sie in den Zusammenhang eines Œuvres, das sich über gut fünf Jahrzehnte von den 1960er bis in die 2010er Jahre entwickelt hat. Die Ausstellung beginnt bei den frühen Werken, die beeinflusst von der Konzeptkunst Sprache und Zeit thematisieren. Fotografie, Film und Performance sind die bevorzugten Medien der Künstlerin.

Geboren als Natalia Lach heiratet sie 1964 den Künstler und Theoretiker Andrzej Lachowicz (1939 – 2015). Bis zu "Transfiguration of Odin", einer Fotoserie von 2009, ist er eines ihrer Modelle. Gemeinsam sind sie Gründungsmitglieder des einflussreichen Künstlerkollektivs der Permafo Galerie (Permanente Formalisierung) in Wroclaw, die zwischen 1970 und 1981 die Geburtsstätte der Neo-Avantgarde und Konzept Kunst in Polen war. Früh bricht sie mit den Normen konzeptueller Kunst. Sie thematisiert Erotik und starke Emotionen. Kunst versteht sie als einen Zustand des Bewusstseins. Sie konzentriert sich auf das rational schwer Zugängliche, auf Schlaf und Träume und auf universale Zusammenhänge. Sie führt spirituelle Initiationen auf. Ist Priesterin, Göttin, Meisterin der Zeremonien und positioniert sich in der Konstellation von Sternbildern. Fotoserien und Filme vermitteln einen Einblick in diese Zeit.

In den 1980er und 1990er Jahren beschäftigt sie sich mit Ideen Platons zu symmetrischen und geometrischen Körpern. Sie entdeckt Wagner und die Kosmologie der nordischen Mythologie der Edda. Transfiguration, die Verwandlung des Körpers in ein himmlisches Wesen, werden zentrale Motive in ihrer Arbeit.

Das Gesamtwerk der Künstlerin aus gut 5 Jahrzenten wurde erst 2015 im Ujazdowski Castle in Warschau in der Ausstellung "Secretum et Tremor" der Öffentlichkeit präsentiert.

The Mysterious World – Natalia LL ist die erste Übersichtsausstellung in einem Museum außerhalb Polens. Natalia Lach–Lachowicz wurde 1937 in Żywiec, Polen geboren und studierte von 1957 bis 1963 an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wroclaw Grafik, Malerei und Glasgestaltung. Sie lebt in Wroclaw, in Polen.
