"Us and Them"

The exhibition "Us and Them" is part of the international photography triennial RAY 2021 in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region. RAY 2021 presents contemporary photography and related media under the theme of "IDEOLOGIES". Taking place at over 11 exhibition venues in the area, critically reflexive art, which questions its own foundations of creation and the very act of its presentation as well, will be shown. The association of the viewer with the artwork is determined by a disturbance, friction, exaggeration and by the production of something new, unsettling the manipulative fusion of the image with the viewer. The works challenge us to look at images critically, to analyze and understand them.

"Us and them" transports the viewer to various communities whose identity formation follows the principle of demarcation and thus, of exclusion. The mechanisms employed to nurture a sense of belonging, strength and control range from the establishment of comprehensive security systems to the creation of myths and the evocation of enemy images to be fought against.

In his series "Kontakt", Máté Bartha (*1987, HU) portraits military summer camps in Hungary for children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18. Camping out in the open air, they hike, sing together and receive military training with replica weapons. The programme, which demands strict discipline from its participants, sometimes includes punishments such as push-ups, and may also result in bruises. The camps are intended to instil camaraderie and patriotism in the girls and boys, as well as a sense of belonging to a strong community.

Working as a photographer in North Korea is almost impossible. Ruled by an aggressive leader, the country censors all incoming as well as all outgoing information. Despite these adversities, Eddo Hartmann (*1973, NL) officially visited North Korea four times between 2014 and 2017 and took photographs in the capital Pyongyang. The images of his project “Setting the Stage” show a metropolis, charged with imposing symbolism and built in accordance with the socialist ideal. The city appears cold and deserted, but above all serves as a curious stage set for the self-created myth of the authoritarian regime.

The so-called "National Socialist Underground" (NSU) is responsible for the racially motivated killing of nine people in Germany between 2000 and 2007, and numerous other crimes. It was not until 2013 that the trial against the right-wing extremist terrorist group, which had long gone undetected, began. At that time, Hamburg photographer Paula Markert (*1982, D) started to work on her project "A Journey through Germany. The NSU series of murders". In her work, she documents people and places associated with the group, thus creating multi-layered imagery of the inconceivable events and their processing by state institutions, the latter of which remains questionable to this day.

For most people, any mention of Switzerland conjures up images of a peaceful alpine idyll in the heart of Europe. However, in the publication "How to Secure a Country" by Salvatore Vitale (*1986, I), it reveals a different side of itself, that of a highly militarised state permeated by a far-reaching security system and safety-mindedness. In observations collected over many years, Vitale’s visual research project details the way his adopted country deals with military border security, IT infrastructure, cyber-crime and terrorism.

Die Ausstellung "Us and Them" ist Teil der Fotografietriennale RAY 2021 in Frankfurt und dem Rhein Main Gebiet. RAY 2021 präsentiert zeitgenössische Fotografie sowie deren verwandte Medien unter dem Thema "IDEOLOGIEN". An über 11 Ausstellungsorten in der Region wird kritisch reflexive Kunst gezeigt, die ihre eigenen Grundlagen zur Entstehung und das Zeigen mit hinterfragt. Die Identifikation der Betrachtenden mit dem Kunstwerk ist hier per se durch eine Störung, Reibung, Übertreibung und durch die Produktion von etwas Neuem bestimmt, die manipulative Verschmelzung von Bild und Betrachter gehemmt. Die Werke fordern auf, Bilder kritisch zu betrachten, sie zu analysieren und zu verstehen.

"Us and Them" widmet sich verschiedenen Gemeinschaften, deren Identitätsbildung dem Prinzip der Abgrenzung und somit auch dem der Ausgrenzung folgt. Die eingesetzten Mechanismen, die das Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit, Stärke und Kontrolle erzeugen sollen, reichen von der Etablierung umfassender Sicherheitssysteme über die Schaffung von Mythen bis hin zur Erzeugung von Feindbildern, die es zu bekämpfen gilt.

In seiner Serie "Kontakt" beschäftigt sich Máté Bartha (*1987, Ungarn) mit militärischen Sommercamps in Ungarn für Kinder und Jugendliche zwischen 10 und 18 Jahren. Dort zelten sie unter freiem Himmel, wandern, singen gemeinsam und werden mit Waffen-Nachbildungen militärisch trainiert. Bei dem mit strenger Disziplin durchgeführten Programm gibt es auch mal blaue Flecken oder Liegestütze als Strafe. Ziel der Camps ist es, den Mädchen und Jungen Kameradschaft und Patriotismus zu vermitteln sowie das Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit zu einer starken Gemeinschaft.

In Nordkorea als Fotograf zu arbeiten, ist nahezu unmöglich. Das von einem aggressiv auftretenden Führer regierte Land kontrolliert und zensiert nicht nur alle Informationen, die ins Land kommen, sondern auch die, die hinausgehen. Dennoch hat Eddo Hartmann (*1973, Niederlande) Nordkorea zwischen 2014 und 2017 viermal offiziell bereist und in der Hauptstadt Pjöngjang fotografiert. Die Aufnahmen seines Projektes "Setting the Stage" zeigen eine mit imposanter Symbolik aufgeladene und nach sozialistischem Vorbild errichtete Millionenstadt, die nicht nur kalt und menschenleer erscheint, sondern v. a. als kurioses Bühnenbild für den selbsterschaffenen Mythos des autoritären Regimes dient.

Der "Nationalsozialistische Untergrund" (NSU) hat zwischen 2000 und 2007 in Deutschland neun Personen aus rassistischen Motiven getötet und zahlreiche weitere Straftaten begangen. Erst im Jahr 2013 begann der Prozess gegen die lange unentdeckt gebliebene rechtsextremistische Terrorgruppe. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt startete die Hamburger Fotografin Paula Markert (*1982, Deutschland) ihr Projekt "Eine Reise durch Deutschland. Die Mordserie der NSU". In Ihrer Arbeit dokumentiert sie Menschen und Orte, die mit der Gruppe in Verbindung stehen, und erzeugt damit ein vielschichtiges Bild der unfassbaren Vorgänge und ihrer bis heute fragwürdigen Aufarbeitung durch die staatlichen Institutionen.

Wer an die Schweiz denkt, hat meist das Bild eines friedlichen alpinen Idylls im Herzen Europas im Kopf. In der Publikation "How to Secure a Country" von Salvatore Vitale (*1986, Italien) offenbart sich das Land jedoch auch als hochmilitarisierter Staat, der von einem weitgreifenden Sicherheitssystem und -denken durchdrungen ist. In seiner langjährigen visuellen Recherche befasst Vitale sich damit, wie dies im Umgang mit militärischer Grenzsicherung, IT-Infrastruktur, Cyber-Kriminalität und Terrorismus in seiner Wahlheimat zutage tritt.
