Together with The Photographers’ Gallery in London, the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize is awarded annually to a living artist of any nationality who has made the most significant contribution to the photographic medium in Europe. The artists are nominated by a selected group of over 100 experts for a project presented in an exhibition or publication in the previous year.

The four finalists in 2021 are Poulomi Basu, Alejandro Cartagena, Cao Fei und Zineb Sedira. Their bold wide-ranging projects cover geographical territories from Algeria to China and explore issues affecting both the local and the global. From Poulomi Basu’s uncompromisingly complex depiction of conflict in Central India, Alejandro Cartagena’s scathing critique exploring the repercussions of homeownership and developments in northern Mexico, to Cao Fei’s dystopic multi-media fabrications that consider the enormous impact of technologies on lived experiences and Zineb Sedira’s auto-fictive exploration of memory, culture and belonging.

The winner of the £30,000 prize will be announced at an award ceremony on 9th September 2021. This year's jury consists of Cristina de Middel, artist; Simon Njami, independent curator, writer, lecturer and art critic; Anna Tellgren, curator of photography at Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Anne-Marie Beckmann, Director of the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, Frankfurt and Brett Rogers, Director of The Photographers’ Gallery as the non-voting chair.

Founded in 1971, The Photographers’ Gallery in London is one of the most important exhibition venues for photography worldwide. This year the Gallery celebrates its 50th anniversary and the Photography Prize will also be awarded for the 25th time this year. The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2021 exhibition was curated by Anna Dannemann of the Photographers’ Gallery and will be on display in The Cube, Eschborn, until 19 September 2021. For the first time in parallel, the works of the four finalists will be shown in the Prize exhibition in the Photographers’ Gallery in London from 25 June 2021 on.

Der Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize wird jährlich von der Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation gemeinsam mit der Photographers’ Gallery in London an eine*einen internationalen zeitgenössischen Fotokünstler*in vergeben, der*die einen bedeutenden Beitrag zur Fotografie in Europa geleistet hat. Die Künstler*innen werden von einer ausgewählten Gruppe von über 100 Expert*innen für ein Projekt nominiert, das im Vorjahr in einer Ausstellung präsentiert oder in einer Publikation veröffentlicht wurde.

Die vier Finalist*innen 2021 sind Poulomi Basu, Alejandro Cartagena, Cao Fei und Zineb Sedira. Ihre mutigen und weitreichenden Projekte umfassen geographische Gebiete von Algerien bis China und beschäftigen sich mit Themen von sowohl lokaler als auch globaler Bedeutung. Sie reichen von Poulomi Basus kompromisslos komplexer Darstellung eines Konflikts in Zentralindien und Alejandro Cartagenas vernichtender Kritik der Auswirkungen von Wohneigentum und Immobilienentwicklungsprojekten im Norden Mexikos über den enormen Einfluss von Technologien auf persönliche Erfahrungen in Cao Feis dystopischen Multimediaproduktionen bis hin zu Zineb Sediras autofiktiver Erkundung von Erinnerung, Kultur und Zugehörigkeit.

Die mit 30.000 Britischen Pfund dotierte Auszeichnung wird am 9. September 2021 in London verliehen. Die diesjährige Jury besteht aus Cristina de Middel, Künstlerin; Simon Njami, unabhängiger Kurator, Schriftsteller, Dozent und Kunstkritiker; Anna Tellgren, Kuratorin für Fotografie, Moderna Museet, Stockholm sowie Anne-Marie Beckmann, Direktorin Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation. Brett Rogers, Direktorin der Photographers’ Gallery, führt den Vorsitz (ohne Stimmabgabe).

Die Photographers’ Gallery in London wurde 1971 gegründet und zählt weltweit zu den wichtigsten Ausstellungsorten für Fotografie. In diesem Jahr feiert sie ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen und auch der Photography Prize wird in diesem Jahr zum 25. Mal vergeben. Die Ausstellung zum Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2021 wurde von Anna Dannemann von der Photographers’ Gallery kuratiert und ist bis zum 19. September 2021 in The Cube, Eschborn, zu sehen. Erstmals zeitgleich werden die Arbeiten der vier Finalisten ab dem 25. Juni 2021 in der Prize Ausstellung in der Photographers’ Gallery in London gezeigt.
