The exhibition FAMILIY STORIES: WIEBKE LOEPER | DINU LI brings together the two artists Wiebke Loeper (Germany) and Dinu Li (Hong Kong, lives and works in Manchester, England) to a journey in time and space, history and family memories. Wiebke Loeper was born in Eastberlin in the early 70’s. Her uncles Willy and Willi, both butchers, were brought up in Pomerania. Separated by the world depression and Second World War, Willy went to America whilst Willi flew to a region later part of the DDR; both continuing the profession of butchery in their new environments. In Loeper’s concentrated, subtle photos, she follows and documents the life paths of her two uncles, dealing with themes of origins, pasts and fortuities. The artist has received relevant awards such as theGoldrausch-award, DAAD scholarship, Anne-Biermann-Price for German Contemporary Photographyand is a fellow of theFederal Cultural Foundation, Germany. The works of Dinu Li concern time and space, absence and presence. Born in Hong Kong, he was early fascinated by his mother’s life history. His works display a three-year study into his 77 year-old mother’s memories and life journeys, taking us from present to past and from East to West, between England, Hong Kong and Guangdong, China. He has taken part in many exhibitions, including the Liverpool Biennale, Shanghai Art Fair as well as a curatorial debut for Chinese Arts Centre’s. Li has been the recipient of many residency programmes and awards, including the Arts Council of England’s Year of the Artist Award.
