For award-winning Israeli/American photographer Elinor Carucci intimacy can be found everywhere. We can look inward, into our own lives, our bodies or at our intimate experiences, or those of our family and friends. We can find intimacy in landscapes and urban-scapes, in the streets, in the bus or train, in a bar or park: in how a place feels, in how we feel or think, in any given day, in any given place.

In this three-day FFF ACADEMY masterclass Elinor Carucci aims to encourage participants to discover intimacy as a motif. She will help participants concentrate on this intimacy in order to investigate, comment on, and reveal the spaces and people which life brings with it.

The main objective of the masterclass is the conception and realization of a personal photo project about intimacy. In addition, the masterclass provides students with an understanding of perspective and style and a technical and conceptual fluency that they may apply within their own methods.

Elinor Carucci has been awarded the International Center of Photography Infinity Award (2001), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2002) and the New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship (2010). She is highly regarded as a teacher of photography and is currently instructing at the graduate program of photography at School of Visual Arts in NYC. She is represented by Edwynn Houk Gallery.

The photographer is internationally recognized for intimate self-portraiture and photographs of her family and objects in home settings, capturing sensuality and tensions of everyday life.

Born in Jerusalem in 1971, she has lived, worked and taught in New York City since the late 1990s when her seminal book Closer was published. Carucci went on to create other unique books such as Diary of a Dancer, MOTHER, and most recently MIDLIFE. Her work has been included in many solo and group exhibitions worldwide and appeared in publications internationally such as The Guardian, The New Yorker, and W magazine. Her photographs are found in collections such as the Jewish Museum, the MoMA, in New York City, and at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

The Fotografie Forum Frankfurt has exhibited one-person shows from her series Closer (1999) and Diary of a Dancer (2005). Recently her work was seen in Family Affairs: Familie in der aktuellen Fotografie at the Deichtorhallen, Hamburg. This FFF Masterclass will be held in English.

Intimität kann man überall finden, sagt die israelisch-amerikanische Fotokünstlerin Elinor Carucci: beim Blick nach innen, auf unser eigenes Leben, auf unseren Körper oder besonders innige Erfahrungen in der Familie oder mit Freunden. Ebenso auf der Straße, im Bus oder im Zug, in einer Bar oder im Park. Auch Landschaften und urbane Räume können Innigkeit oder Heimeligkeit ausstrahlen – in der Art, wie sich ein Ort anfühlt, wie wir uns dort fühlen oder was wir denken, an einem bestimmten Tag, zu einer bestimmten Zeit.

In ihrer dreitägigen Masterclass der FFF AKADEMIE will die Fotografin Elinor Carucci die Teilnehmer*innen ermutigen, Intimität als fotografisches Motiv zu entdecken. Dabei zeigt die Künstlerin unter anderem, wie Intimität im Bild dazu beitragen kann, Räume und Menschen in ihrem Lebensumfeld zu befragen, zu kommentieren und sichtbar zu machen.

Im Fokus der Masterclass steht die Entwicklung eines persönliches Fotoprojekt, von der Idee über die Konzeption bis zur Umsetzung. Neben der Vermittlung einer technischen und konzeptionellen Gewandtheit für die fotografische Praxis geht es um das Verständnis von Sichtweise und Stil.

Elinor Carucci wurde mit dem International Center of Photography Infinity Award (2001), einem Guggenheim-Stipendium (2002) und dem New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship (2010) ausgezeichnet. Sie ist vielgefragte Dozentin für Fotografie und unterrichtet derzeit im Graduiertenprogramm für Fotografie an der School of Visual Arts in NYC. International bekannt wurde sie mit ihren intimen Selbstporträts, Fotografien ihrer Familie und mit ihren Bildern von Gegenständen in Wohnsituationen, mit denen sie Sinnlichkeit und Spannung des Alltags sichtbar macht.

Die 1971 in Jerusalem geborene Künstlerin lebt, arbeitet und lehrt seit den späten 1990er Jahren in New York City. Nach der Veröffentlichung ihrer wegweisenden Monografie Closer (2002) schuf Carucci weitere einzigartige Bücher wie Diary of A Dancer, MOTHER und zuletzt MIDLIFE. Ihre Arbeiten wurden weltweit in zahlreichen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen gezeigt und erschienen in internationalen Publikationen wie The Guardian, The New Yorker und W Magazine. Die Fotografien der Künstlerin befinden sich in bedeutenden Sammlungen, u.a. im Jewish Museum und dem MoMA in New York City sowie im Houston Museum of Fine Arts.

Das Fotografie Forum Frankfurt hat das Werk Elinor Caruccis bereits zweimal gezeigt: in den Einzelausstellungen Closer (1999) und Diary of a Dancer (2005). Kürzlich waren Arbeiten der Fotografin in Family Affairs: Familie in der aktuellen Fotografie in den Hamburger Deichtorhallen zu sehen.
