In the exhibition "Barbara Wolff: Photographs" at the Goethe-Institut Bordeaux, works from the series "Biography" (1982 - 1989), "Metropolis" (2018 - 2020) as well as "Amazonia" (2019) will be shown in collaboration with Collection Regard Berlin. 

In the series „Biography“ she observed life on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Like few photographers, she has been able to reflect on her images and experiences in both German countries - before the fall of the wall. Fixed points in Barbara Wolff‘s work are always records of biographical moments and formative stations of her life in the GDR and in the FRG. In capturing those photographic moments charged with personal and subjective significance, Barbara Wolff‘s shares her individual world of experience. At the literally decisive moment, the photographer succeeds in sensitively capturing her subjects in high photographic quality and in balanced compositions. At the same time, Barbara Wolff‘s artistic language has a strong humanistic component. Many images show us people in their immediate and uncompromising dignity, in the tension between strength and fragility.

The series "Metropolis" reflects the urban space in the 21st century. The images tell of residents and their urban environment. Patterns of the city emerge, networks of relationships between people, architecture and (artificial) nature. It is about the transformation of the city, about provocation and chaos. The idea is to perceive secret places but also to share visions. We visit S-Bahn stations, Berlin waterways, graffiti walls and full shopping malls, but also see the famous (empty) Berlin squares and stand in front of closed doors of techno clubs in the Corona year 2020. Originally posted on Instagram, Wolff's Berlin photographs from the Metropolis series are assembled in the book METROPOLIS published by the publishing house LUNIK BERLIN.

Barbara Wolff found the motives for the series "Amazonia" during an exhibition stay in Belém, Brazil 2019. The warm and humid tropical climate and existential environmental and social conditions determine the lives of the people. Wolff‘s photographs tell of love and work and days when the boundaries between the two blur. 

Barbara Wolff uses different techniques and device formats - from smartphones to large format 4x5 inches cameras. The prints presented in the exhibitions are her self-made classic silver prints, because for her "the images are that what remains".

Barbara Wolff (*1951) grew up in the GDR and studied photography at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. In 1985 she moved to the Federal Republic of Germany. Her free photographic works have been shown in Berlin (2017, 2020, 2021), Arles (2018, 2021), Vendome (2019), Geneva (2019), Belém (Brazil, 2019) and Paris (2021) and they are present in national and international collections. The photographer lives and works in Berlin.

In der Ausstellung "Barbara Wolff: Fotografien" im Goethe-Institut Bordeaux werden in Zusammenarbeit mit der Collection Regard Berlin Arbeiten aus den Serien "Biografie" (1982 – 1989), "Metropolis" (2018 – 2020) sowie "Amazonia" (2019) gezeigt.

Mit der Serie "Biografie" beobachtete sie das Leben auf beiden Seiten des Eisernen Vorhangs. Wie nur wenige Fotografen/ innen hat sie Ihre Bilder und Erfahrungen in beiden deutschen Stadten reflektieren können - vor dem Fall der Mauer. Fixpunkte im Werk von Barbara Wolff sind immer wieder Aufzeichnungen von biografischen Augenblicken und prägenden Stationen ihres Lebens in der DDR und in der Bundesrepublik – es entstehen mit persönlicher und subjektiver Bedeutsamkeit aufgeladene fotografische Momente, die den Betrachter einbeziehen in Barbara Wolffs individuelle Erfahrungswelt. Im wortwörtlichen entscheidenden Moment gelingt es der Fotografin, ihre Sujets feinfühlig in hoher fotografischer Qualität und in ausgewogenen Kompositionen einzufangen. Dabei hat die künstlerische Sprache von Barbara Wolff eine starke humanistische Komponente. Viele Bilder zeigen uns Menschen in ihrer unmittelbaren und kompromisslosen Würde, im Spannungsfeld zwischen Zerbrechlichkeit und Stärke.

Die Serie "Metropolis" reflektiert den urbanen Raum im 21. Jahrhundert. Die Bilder erzählen von Bewohnern und ihrem städtischen Umfeld. Es entstehen Muster der Stadt, Beziehungsgeflechte zwischen Mensch, Architektur und (künstlicher) Natur. Dabei geht es um den Wandel der Stadt, um Provokation und Chaos. Es geht um Geheimnisse, aber auch um Visionen. Wir besuchen S-Bahnhöfe, Berliner Gewässer, Graffiti Wände und volle Shopping Malls, sehen aber auch die berühmten (leeren) Berliner Plätze und stehen vor geschlossenen Türen der Techno Clubs im Corona-Jahr 2020. Ursprünglich auf Instagram gepostet, sind Wolffs Berlin-Bilder der Metropolis-Serie in einem Fotografiebuch gesammelt und im LUNIK BERLIN Verlag veröffentlicht.

Die Motive der Serie "Amazonia" findet Barbara Wolff während eines Ausstellungsaufenthaltes in Belém, Brasilien 2019. Das feuchtwarmen Tropenklima und existentielle Umwelt- und Sozialbedingungen bestimmen das Leben der Menschen. Wolffs Bilder erzählen von Liebe und Arbeit und Tagen, an denen die Grenzen zwischen beidem verschwimmen.

Barbara Wolff benutzt unterschiedliche Techniken und Aufnahmeformate - vom Smartphone bis zum Großformat 4x5. Ihre Ausstellungsobjekte sind letztendlich selbstvergrößerte Schwarzweiss Barytabzüge, denn "es sind die Bilder die bleiben".

Ihre freien fotografischen Arbeiten wurden in Berlin (2017, 2020, 2021), Arles (2018, 2021), Vendome (2019), Genf (2019), Belém (Brasilien, 2019) und Paris (2021) gezeigt und sind in internationalen Sammlungen vertreten. Die Fotografin lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

Barbara Wolff (*1951) a grandi en RDA et a étudié la photographie à l'Académie des arts visuels de Leipzig. En 1985, elle s'installe en République fédérale d'Allemagne. Son travail photographique libre a été présenté à Berlin (2017, 2020, 2021), Arles (2018, 2021), Vendôme (2019), Genève (2019), Belém (Brésil, 2019) et Paris (2021) et fait partie de collections nationales et internationales. Dans la série "Biographie", elle a observé la vie des deux côtés du rideau de fer. Comme peu de photographes, elle a pu travailler sur ses images et ses expériences dans ces deux pays et ce avant la chute du mur. Les points fixes dans l'œuvre de Barbara Wolff sont encore et toujours des instantanés de moments biographiques pris lors de moments importants dans sa vie en RDA et en RFA. En saisissant ces moments photographiques chargés de signification subjective et Barbara Wolff nous fait partager son expérience individuelle. En les captant, Wolff fait preuve d´un sens extraordinaire de la composition, ainsi que d´une grande sensibilité. Son vocabulaire artistique est celui de la photographie humaniste. De nombreuses photos nous montrent des gens dans leur dignité immédiate et sans concession, dans la tension entre force et fragilité.

La série "Metropolis" reflète l'espace urbain au 21ème siècle. Les photographies nous parlent des habitants et de leur environnement urbain. Les structures de la ville émergent ; les relations entre les gens ainsi que l'architecture et la nature (réelle ou non) se révèlent. Il s'agit de faire voir le changement dans la ville, la provocation et le chaos. Il s'agit de percevoir les endroits secrets mais aussi de partager des visions. Nous découvrons les stations de métro, les cours d´eaux de Berlin, les murs de graffitis et les centres commerciaux pleins. À cause de la pandémie de la COVID 19, nous découvrons les places célèbres de Berlin complètement vides et nous tenons devant les portes fermées des clubs technos. Publiées à l'origine sur Instagram, les photographies berlinoises de Wolff de la série Metropolis sont rassemblées dans le livre METROPOLIS publié par la maison d´édition LUNIK BERLIN.

Barbara Wolff a trouvé les motifs de la série « Amazonia » lors d'une exposition à Belém au Brésil en 2019. Le climat tropical chaud et humide et les conditions environnementales et sociales déterminent la vie des gens. Les photos de Wolff racontent l'amour et le travail et les jours où les frontières entre les deux s'estompent.

Barbara Wolff utilise différentes techniques et formats d´appareils - du smartphones au grand format 4x5 pouces. Les tirages présentés dans les expositions sont ses propres tirages classiques argentiques, car pour elle « ce sont les images qui restent ».
