Today, we live in a media landscape where technology trains us to perform and ascribe personal and supposedly authentic meaning to any trackable and commodifiable action—we create profiles where we post our social life to Instagram, it is represented in images and their interrelations online, and all the while, its data is extracted and monetized by the same corporate platforms where it all plays out. On one hand, the creation of profiles, alternative avatars and the production or embellishment of identity has become normalized online; while on the other, the politicization of identity and its subsequent tokenization is at the center of cultural debates in Western society.

On the side of both the author and the spectator, the production of the profile is a central process and motif of contemporary social relations. While we may believe, we are in control of constructing the social media profiles to represent ourselves online, processes such as consumer or police profiling constructs representations of us modelled on the technological perception of our behavior. This polarity, between author and spectator persists in how we approach works of art and how artists today might think about how the meaning of their work is construed.

In der aktuellen Medienlandschaft werden wir durch die Technologie dazu erzogen, jeder verfolgbaren und kommerziell verwertbaren Handlung eine persönliche und vermeintlich authentische Bedeutung zuzuschreiben - wir erstellen Profile, in denen wir unser soziales Leben auf Instagram posten, das sich in Bildern und Verknüpfungen online dargestellt, während die Daten von denselben Unternehmensplattformen, auf denen sich alles abspielt, extrahiert und monetarisiert werden. Auf der einen Seite ist die Erstellung von Profilen, alternativen Avataren und die Herstellung oder Verschönerung von Identität online normalisiert, während auf der anderen Seite die Politisierung von Identität und ihre anschließende Verwertung im Mittelpunkt der kulturellen Debatten in der westlichen Gesellschaft steht.

Sowohl auf der Seite der Autor*innen als auch auf der der Zuschauer:*innen ist die Kreation des Profils ein zentraler Prozess und ein zentrales Motiv heutiger sozialer Beziehungen. Auch wenn wir glauben, dass wir die Kontrolle über die Erstellung von Profilen in den sozialen Medien haben, um uns online zu repräsentieren, konstruieren Prozesse wie die Erstellung von Verbraucher- oder Polizeiprofilen Darstellungen von uns, die auf der technologischen Wahrnehmung unseres Verhaltens basieren. Diese Polarität zwischen Autor*innen und Betrachter*innen setzt sich in der Art und Weise fort, wie wir uns Kunstwerken nähern und wie Künstler*innen heute darüber nachdenken, wie die Bedeutung ihrer Arbeit konstruiert wird.

Die Ausstellungsreihe "SEEN BY" ist eine Kooperation zwischen der Kunstbibliothek der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin und der Universität der Künste Berlin im Museum für Fotografie.
