The exhibition CURRENCY: PHOTOGRAPHY BEYOND CAPTURE at Deichtorhallen Hamburg explores conceptual engagements with photography in the "retinal age". In our accelerated era of circulation and instrumentation, images not only act as records of events and imprints of experience but also fundamentally shape acts of seeing and being seen. Approaching photographs as contextual frames for narrative invention, the exhibition critically considers how knowledge has been sought through the photographic apparatus over the course of its history and reimagined by artists and photographers through conceptual and poetic approaches to the medium. CURRENCY looks at how these practitioners have challenged the meaning and value of photographic images and investigated the extended lives, temporalities, and materialities of image cultures beyond the moment of capture.

The exhibition weaves experimental modes of appearance, multisensory evocation, and archival and documentary practice as novel possibilities and vocabularies for seeing and interpreting. In staging works by twenty-nine artists and photographers, the exhibition draws connections across geographies and eras, tracing intergenerational and transnational affinities through several motifs: the deconstruction and transformation of photographic canons; countermapping in the Anthropocene across landscapes of extractive capitalism, military occupation, and appropriation; tenderness as a relational framework for photography; and material explorations into the medium’s alchemical processes. These motifs structure CURRENCY and offer through lines across a range of perspectives.

Die Ausstellung CURRENCY: PHOTOGRAPHY BEYOND CAPTURE (Currency: Fotografie jenseits der Aufnahme) untersucht die konzeptionelle Auseinandersetzung mit Fotografie im "retinalen Zeitalter". Die allgegenwärtige beschleunigte Zirkulation und Instrumentalisierung von Bildern dient nicht nur der Aufzeichnung von Ereignissen und Erfahrungen, sondern prägt auch grundlegend Vorgänge des Sehens und Gesehenwerdens. Die Ausstellung betrachtet Fotografien als kontextuelle Rahmen für narrative Erfindungen. So führt sie eine kritische Auseinandersetzung darüber, wie in der Geschichte des fotografischen Apparats nach Erkenntnissen gesucht wurde und wie die Künstler*innen und Fotograf*innen das Medium konzeptionell und poetisch immer wieder neu erfunden haben. CURRENCY untersucht, wie Künstler*innen die Bedeutung und den Wert fotografischer Bilder in Frage stellen und das Umfeld, die Zeitlichkeit und die Materialität von Bildkulturen über den Moment der Aufnahme hinaus erforschen.

Die Ausstellung verwebt Formen experimentelle und multisensorische Erscheinungsformen mit archivarischen und dokumentarischen Praktiken, und entwickelt so ein neues Vokabular des Sehens und Interpretierens. Mit der Präsentation von 29 künstlerischen Positionen zieht die Ausstellung Querverbindungen über Geografien, Epochen und Generationen hinweg und spürt anhand verschiedener Motive Gemeinsamkeiten nach: die Gegenüberstellung und Dekonstruktion fotografischer Kanons; die Gegenkartierung im Anthropozän (anhand von durch militärische Besatzung oder extraktivem Kapitalismus geprägter Landschaften; Zärtlichkeit als Beziehungsrahmen für die Fotografie; und materielle Erkundungen der alchemistischen Prozesse des Mediums. Diese Kapitelmotive strukturieren CURRENCY und zeigen über unterschiedliche Perspektiven hinweg neue Sichtachsen auf.
