She creates photographic art of her very own kind and is considered as a remarkable new talent: Nhu Xuan Hua, born in Paris in 1989 to a family of Vietnamese origin, has made her name internationally as a fashion and portrait photographer. She works for magazines such as Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, Dazed Beauty and TIME Magazine as well as for major fashion brands such as Dior, Kenzo and Levi's. The exhibition "NHU XUAN HUA. HUG OF A SWAN" highlights the photographer's artistic work and underlines its fascinating versatility.

Nhu Xuan Hua's family fled to Belgium and France after the Vietnam War (1955-1975), where Hua was born. After leaving her parental home, she felt increasingly cut off from her roots. So she interviewed family members about her past, hoping to fill the gap and learn something about herself. The artistic response to this research can be seen at Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF): installations and objects specially designed for the exhibition, as well as digitally manipulated photographs inspired by family photos.

By combining commissioned and artistic works, the show demonstrates that Hua's entire body of work deals with questions of identity, family history and repressed memories – also in the hope of learning more about her own roots.

Nhu Xuan Hua graduated from the photography course at the Auguste Renoir Academy of Art in Paris in 2011. One of her most famous photo shoots was cover of TIME Magazine in 2018; for the cover theme "Leaders of the next generation", Hua had photographed the K-pop band BTS. Tropism, Nhu Xuan Hua's first monograph, was published in 2022 (by Area Books, Paris). The artist currently lives in Paris.

The FFF presents "NHU XUAN HUA. HUG OF A SWAN" in cooperation with Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography, Amsterdam (HMA), where the artist's work was first shown in a museum in 2022. The exhibition was curated by Nanda van den Berg (Director HMA) and Désirée Kroep (Junior Curator, HMA) together with Nhu Xuan Hua.

Sie macht Fotokunst ganz eigener Art und gilt als bemerkenswertes neues Talent: Nhu Xuan Hua, 1989 in Paris als Tochter einer vietnamesisch-stämmigen Familie geboren, hat sich als Mode- und Porträtfotografin international einen Namen gemacht. Sie arbeitet für Magazine wie Vogue, The Wall Street Journal, Dazed Beauty und TIME Magazine sowie für große Fashionmarken wie Dior, Kenzo und Levi's. Die Ausstellung "NHU XUAN HUA. HUG OF A SWAN" konzentriert sich auf das künstlerische Schaffen der Fotografin und unterstreicht dessen faszinierende Vielseitigkeit.

Nhu Xuan Huas Familie floh nach dem Vietnamkrieg (1955–1975) nach Belgien und Frankreich, wo Hua geboren wurde. Nachdem sie ihr Elternhaus verlassen hatte, fühlte sie sich zunehmend von ihren Wurzeln abgeschnitten. Also befragte sie Familienmitglieder zu ihrer Vergangenheit, in der Hoffnung, die Lücke zu schließen und etwas über sich selbst zu erfahren. Die künstlerische Antwort auf diese Recherche ist im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) zu sehen: speziell für die Ausstellung entworfene Installationen, Objekte und digital manipulierte Fotografien, die von Familienfotos inspiriert sind.

Durch die Mischung beauftragter und künstlerischer Arbeiten zeigt die Schau, dass Hua sich in ihrem gesamten Werk mit Fragen zu Identität, Familiengeschichte und verdrängten Erinnerungen befasst – auch in der Hoffnung, mehr über die eigenen Wurzeln zu erfahren.

Nhu Xuan Hua schloss 2011 den Fotografiekurs an der Kunstakademie Auguste Renoir in Paris ab. Eines ihrer berühmtesten Fotoshootings war Cover des "TIME Magazine" im Jahr 2018; für das Titelthema "Leaders of the next generation" hatte Hua die K-Pop-Band BTS fotografiert. 2022 erschien Tropism, Nhu Xuan Huas erste Monografie (bei Area Books, Paris). Derzeit lebt die Künstlerin in Paris.

Das FFF präsentiert "NHU XUAN HUA. HUG OF A SWAN" in Kooperation mit Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography, Amsterdam (HMA), wo das Werk der Künstlerin 2022 erstmals in einem Museum gezeigt wurde. Die Ausstellung wurde von Nanda van den Berg (Direktorin HMA) und Désirée Kroep (Junior-Kuratorin, HMA) gemeinsam mit Nhu Xuan Hua kuratiert.
