An ear in a soup plate, a tangerine that becomes a bomb, an installation with perfectly set but halved tables – the French photographer Nhu Xuan Hua extracts elements from her own biography into her works giving her fashion and editorial photographs a narrative content. In this two-day workshop of the FFF ACADEMY, the artist will teach how to develop picture stories and keep them exciting.

The event is part of the special programme of the current FFF exhibition "NHU XUAN HUA. HUG OF A SWAN", which at the same time offers the best view for the workshop. Nhu Xuan Hua, born in Paris in 1989 to a family of Vietnamese origin, has made her name internationally as a fashion and portrait photographer, particularly because of her unique way of staging her own story(s) in her pictures.

In 2011, Nhu Xuan Hua completed the photography course at the Auguste Renoir art academy in Paris. A year later she moved to London working as a photographer for large fashion companies such as Kenzo, Maison Margiela, Dior and Levi’s. Characteristic of her commissioned works - and equally of her artistic work - is the concept of narrative.

Under the title "NHU XUAN HUA. HUG OF A SWAN, the FFF" is showing the artist's entire oeuvre for the first time in Germany until April 9, 2023. The exhibition was curated in Huis Marseille, Amsterdam, where it was first shown in a museum in 2022. The show brings together Nhu Xuan Hua’s commissioned and artistic works and shows their close thematic interconnection. In all her installations, objects and photographs, the photographic artist addresses questions of origin, identity and family memories and her own engagement with her Vietnamese heritage.

Her first publication Tropism, Consequences of a displaced Memory was published by Area Books. Based on archival pictures from her family, the digital intervention interprets these memories through a new angle, exploring the effect of dissipation generated by time passing and driven by the forces of an inherited memory. Today the artist is based in Paris.

Ein Ohr in einem Suppenteller, eine Mandarine, die zu einer Bombe wird, eine Installation mit hübsch gedeckten, aber halbierten Tischen – die französische Fotografin Nhu Xuan Hua extrahiert in ihren Werken Elemente aus der eigenen Biografie, um ihren Mode- und Editorialfotografien einen erzählerischen Inhalt zu geben. Wie es gelingt, Bilderzählungen zu entwickeln und spannend zu halten, vermittelt die Künstlerin in diesem zweitägigen Workshop der FFF AKADEMIE.

Die Veranstaltung ist Teil des Rahmenprogramms der aktuellen Ausstellung "NHU XUAN HUA. HUG OF A SWAN", die derzeit im Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) beste Anschauung zum Workshop bietet. Nhu Xuan Hua, 1989 in Paris geboren als Tochter einer vietnamesisch-stämmigen Familie, hat sich insbesondere wegen ihrer eigenwilligen Art, in ihren Bildern eigene Geschichte(n) zu inszenieren, einen Namen als international gefragte Mode- und Porträtfotografin gemacht.

Nhu Xuan Hua studierte Kunstgeschichte und Film, schloss 2011 den Fotografiekurs an der Auguste Renoir Technical School in Paris und ging ein Jahr später nach London, wo sie als Modefotografin tätig wurde. Sie arbeitete für international renommierte Unternehmen, darunter Dior, Maison Margiela, Kenzo und Gucci. Charakteristisch für ihre Auftragsarbeiten – und ebenso für ihr künstlerisches Schaffen – ist das Konzept der Erzählung.

Unter dem Titel "NHU XUAN HUA. HUG OF A SWAN" zeigt das FFF das gesamte Werk der Künstlerin noch bis 9. April 2023 erstmals in Deutschland. Kuratiert wurde die Ausstellung in Huis Marseille, Amsterdam, wo sie 2022 erstmals in einem Museum zu sehen war. Die Schau vereint Nhu Xuan Huas beauftragte und künstlerische Arbeiten und zeigt deren enge thematische Verwobenheit. In all ihren Installationen, Objekten und Fotografien thematisiert die Fotokünstlerin Fragen zu Herkunft, Identität und familiären Erinnerungen und ihre eigene Auseinandersetzung mit ihrem vietnamesischen Erbe.

2022 erschien Nhu Xuan Huas erste Publikation Tropism, Consequences of a displaced Memory (bei Area Books, Paris). Die Künstlerin lebt in Paris.
