The American artist Cindy Sherman (*1954 in New Jersey) is one of the most important and internationally successful contemporary artists. In her photographs, she stages herself in a wide range of roles that skewer entrenched ideals and stereotypes in a manner that is as playful as it is critical. Sherman finds inspiration in various forms of visual culture: cinema, television, advertising, magazines, art history, fairy tales, the Internet, and social media act as catalysts for a multifaceted body of photographic work in which fashion is a constant.

With around 50 works spanning five decades, the exhibition "ANTI-FASHION" takes an in-depth look at the fascinating dialogue the artist maintains with the fashion world. Since the 1980s, Sherman has been drawing on a number of commercial commissions from renowned fashion houses and designers such as Chanel and Stella McCartney as well as international fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar as a constant source of inspiration. By the same token, the artist influences and stimulates the aesthetics of the fashion world and continues to inspire an entire generation of photographers.

Sherman’s provocative photographs do not convey the glamour, sex appeal, or elegance that we commonly associate with fashion. Instead, they show characters that are anything but desirable and run counter to the fashion world ideals of flawlessness. Last, but by no means least, the exhibition reveals the subject of fashion as the starting point for the artist’s critical examination of aspects of identity, sex, gender, and age. Sherman’s myriad characters demonstrate the artificiality and mutability of identity, which appears – now more than ever – to be selectable, (self-)constructed, and fluid.

With national and international loans as well as exclusively selected material from the artist’s New York archive, the exhibition is the first to be devoted to the subject of fashion in Sherman’s work. The show is accompanied by a selection of photographic and artistic positions from the Falckenberg Collection – including works by John Baldessari, Karla Black, Monica Bonvicini, Richard Prince and Robert Longo.

The exhibition was curated by Dr. Alessandra Nappo, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and realized by the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in cooperation with Cindy Sherman’s studio in New York and her gallery Hauser & Wirth and will be shown at the FOMU – Fotomuseum Antwerp afterwards. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog published by Sandstein Verlag in German and English, 168 pages, 130 color illustrations, 24.5 x 24.5 cm, hardcover, retail price in bookstores: 38,00 €, retail price in the museum store: 29,90 €.

Die US-Amerikanerin Cindy Sherman (*1954 in New Jersey) zählt zu den bedeutendsten und international erfolgreichsten Künstler*innen der Gegenwart. In ihren Fotografien inszeniert sie sich selbst in vielfältigen Rollen, mit denen sie sowohl spielerisch als auch kritisch tradierte Schönheitsideale und Stereotypen infrage stellt. Inspiriert wird Sherman von unterschiedlichen Bildwelten: Kino, Fernsehen, Werbung, Magazinen, Kunstgeschichte, Märchen, das Internet und die sozialen Medien geben ihr entscheidende Anstöße. Dabei zieht sich die Mode wie ein roter Faden durch Shermans facettenreiches Werk.

Die Ausstellung ANTI-FASHION widmet sich mit rund 50 Werken aus fünf Dekaden umfassend dem fesselnden Dialog zwischen Cindy Sherman und der Modewelt. Kommerzielle Aufträge, die sie seit den 1980er Jahren regelmäßig von renommierten Modehäusern wie Chanel, Designerinnen und Designern wie Stella McCartney sowie internationalen Modemagazinen wie Vogue und Harper’s Bazaar erhält, nutzt sie als ständige Quelle der Inspiration. Aber auch umgekehrt beeinflusst die Künstlerin bis heute die Ästhetik der Modewelt und setzt wesentliche Impulse, auch für eine ganze Generation von Fotograf*innen.

Ihre provokanten Fotografien vermitteln nicht den Glamour, den Sexappeal oder die Eleganz, die wir gemeinhin mit Mode assoziieren. Stattdessen zeigen sie Figuren, die alles andere als begehrenswert sind und den makellosen Idealen der Modewelt widersprechen. Nicht zuletzt erweist sich das Thema Mode für die Künstlerin als Ausgangspunkt ihrer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit Aspekten von Identität, Geschlecht, Gender und Alter. Shermans große Bandbreite an Charakteren zeigt die Künstlichkeit und Wandelbarkeit von Identität, die mehr denn je wählbar, (selbst-)konstruiert und fließend erscheint.

Mit nationalen und internationalen Leihgaben und aus dem New Yorker Archiv der Künstlerin exklusiv ausgewählten Materialien widmet sich die Ausstellung erstmalig dem Thema Mode im Werk von Cindy Sherman. Ergänzt wird sie von fotografischen und künstlerischen Positionen aus dem Bestand der Sammlung Falckenberg – darunter Werke von John Baldessari, Karla Black, Monica Bonvicini, Richard Prince und Robert Longo.

Die Ausstellung wurde von Dr. Alessandra Nappo, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart kuratiert und von der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in Zusammenarbeit mit Cindy Shermans Studio in New York und ihrer Galerie Hauser & Wirth realisiert. Anschließend wird sie im FOMU – Fotomuseum Antwerpen gezeigt.
