Sarah Caron has travelled the globe in her reportage over the past 25 years, spending time in Pakistan over the past decade for assignment of mainstream magazines, seeing and portraying the country in all its facets: from the dangerous regions where tribal lords rule to the haute couture catwalks in Karachi.

On 27 December 2007, Benazir Bhutto, the country’s former prime minister, was assassinated in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Sarah Caron was stuck in a traffic jam by taxi at the same moment. She was on her way to an event with Bhutto and suddenly found herself in the middle of one of the most turbulent phases of the Islamic Republic. A month earlier, she had landed a commission for Time magazine with a scoop: an interview and photo shoot with Bhutto, who was then under house arrest.

Pakistan is a country of which we often only see the worst, yet here Caron presents variations of the country she has travelled through from west to east, from north to south, from its vibrant and teeming megacities to the desert foothills of the Hindu Kush where huge trucks bedecked with multicoloured garlands meander along the winding roads. She has set out to meet its lesser-known populations who exist unaffected by the passing of time, like the last Kalash of Chitral, whom myths wrongly refer to as the descendants of Alexander the Great, or the Mohana, the sea lords of the Indus Valley who live on the shores of Lake Manchar where they keep their traditions alive.

SARAH CARON is an award-winning French photographer who has travelled the globe on assignment for international magazines over the past 25 years. Sarah has always taken a very personal and unique approach to her work. She delves deep into people’s lives and takes a lot of time to convey their circumstances. Her first images taken in India depicted the exile of widows in the north of the country and earned her an exhibition at Visa pour l’Image in 1999. It was then that Caron, who was destined to become a ballet dancer, fully embraced photography and journalism. With an approach that is always sophisticated and never sensational, she is quick to cover the most interesting subjects – the ones we don’t talk about enough. In 2019, Sarah Caron was awarded by the Pulitzer Grant for Editorial Crisis Reporting. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, in Spain, the Netherlands, France, Canada, Cuba, Cambodia, Japan, Vietnam and Pakistan and has been acquired by the Fond National d’Art Contemporain Paris, the Museum of History and Immigration Paris. She has also published six books.

Sarah Caron ist in den letzten 25 Jahren auf ihren Reportagen rund um den Globus gereist. Das letzte Jahrzehnt hat sie im Auftrag von verschieden großen Medien viel Zeit in Pakistan verbracht, um das Land in all seinen Facetten zu porträtieren: von den gefährlichen Regionen, in denen Stammesfürsten herrschen, bis zu den Laufstegen der Haute Couture in Karatschi.
Am 27. Dezember 2007 wurde im pakistanischen Rawalpindi Benazir Bhutto ermordet, die ehemalige Premierministerin des Landes. Sarah Caron steckte im selben Moment mit dem Taxi im Stau. Sie war auf dem Weg zu einer Veranstaltung mit Bhutto und fand sich plötzlich in einer der turbulentesten Phasen der islamischen Republik wieder. Einen Monat zuvor hatte sie vom Magazin Time den Auftrag für ein Interview und eine Fotosession mit Bhutto erhalten, die zu der Zeit unter Hausarrest stand.

Von Pakistan werden oft nur die schlimmsten Seiten gezeigt, und doch präsentiert Sarah Caron die ganze Vielfalt dieses Landes, das sie kreuz und quer bereist hat: von den pulsierenden und quirligen Megacitys bis zu den wüstenartigen Vorgebirgen des Hindukusch, über den sich Straßen schlängeln, in die schwere, mit bunten Girlanden behängte Lastwagen ihre Furchen ziehen. Sie hat vergessene Volksgruppen besucht, die außerhalb der Zeit zu leben scheinen, wie etwa die letzten Kalasha von Chitral, in denen manchmal fälschlicherweise die Nachfahren von Alexander dem Großen gesehen werden, oder die Mohana, die am Manchar-See im Tal des Indus leben und dort ihre Traditionen bewahren.

SARAH CARON ist eine preisgekrönte, französische Fotografin, die in den letzten 25 Jahren im Auftrag internationaler Zeitschriften rund um den Globus gereist ist. Sarah hat immer einen sehr persönlichen und einzigartigen Ansatz für ihre Arbeit gewählt. Sie taucht tief in das Leben der Menschen ein und nimmt sich viel Zeit, um deren Lebensumstände zu vermitteln. Schon mit ihren ersten Arbeiten, die in Indien entstanden, machte sie auf sich aufmerksam. Die Bilder von den Witwen, die in den Norden des Landes ins Exil gehen, wurden 1999 beim Festival Visa pour l’Image gezeigt. In der Folge entschied sich Caron, die eigentlich Balletttänzerin werden wollte, endgültig für die Fotografie und die Reportage. In ihren Bildern, die stets würdevoll und nie reißerisch sind, behandelt sie die wichtigsten Themen: Jene, über die nicht ausreichend gesprochen wird. 2019 wird Sarah Caron mit dem Pulitzer Grant for Editorial Crisis Reporting ausgezeichnet. Ihre Arbeiten wurden in New York, Moskau, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, in Spanien, den Niederlanden, Frankreich, Kanada, Kuba, Kambodscha, Japan, Vietnam und Pakistan ausgestellt und vom Fond National d‘Art Contemporain Paris, dem Museum für Geschichte und Immigration Paris, erworben. Darüber hinaus hat sie sechs Bücher veröffentlicht.
