4 October 2023, the winners of the international Global Peace Photo Award competition were awarded the Alfred Fried Peace Medal at the Austrian Parliament for the eleventh time.

The Peace Image of the Year 2023

The main prize of 10,000 euros "Peace Image of the Year 2023" went to the South Korean artist and photographer Elrea Song.

Trash, waste. Not the only thing that gets swept into the seas. Human biographies, too, disappear in the nowhere, stories end up on a waste heap, achievements of a lifetime are forgotten, fates fade into eternal darkness. It is wars that do that, natural disasters. But also just the human trait of carelessness. The capacity to suppress what threatens life on our planet.

How to remind us of it in order to change it? How to reclaim what has been swept away? South Korean photographer Elrea Song aka Jiyeon Lee has asked children to take something back from the flotsam of the seas that compresses the fragile relations between humans and nature, between lifestyle and nature consumption into poetically crazy images. Joyful and sad, alarming and wonderful at the same time. Thematizing the flood of plastic as well as the desired welcome for those who seek refuge across the seas.

Peace, says Song, can only go forward, if you lend me your feet. And I lend you mine. Meaning: together. And it needs the joint hopes of us all. And the will to rescue what otherwise will be swept away.

Elrea Song, born 1984, lives in Daejeon, South Korea, with her family and three nieces. They are all engaged in collecting waste along the coast. With her photographs, writes Song, she tries to demonstrate solidarity with people and nature. Song studied Visual Communication Design at the College of Arts. Outside Korea her work has been shown in the USA and in Italy and has earned her an Award for Future Artists.“ – This is how the jury’s laudation summarizes the award-worthiness of Elrea Song’s work.

The Children’s Peace Image of the Year 2023

The best peace image in the children’s and youth category, worth 1,000 euros, was won by 14-year-old Barbare Chikviladze from Georgia with her picture "Water Fun".

The jury members from 11 countries found: "Why is the picture we are awarding here a picture of peace for 14-year-old Barbare Chikviladze from the Georgian capital Tbilisi? Because, she writes, she is still young. But she knows very well that 20 percent of her country is occupied by Russia. But peace has to do with freedom. And freedom makes people happy. As happy as her friend was at that moment in a summer garden in Rustavi, when Barbare pressed the shutter release. Every child, she wrote, deserves to be happy and to live in a peaceful country.

Chikviladze, whose mother is a philologist and works in an insurance company and whose father is a lawyer, is growing up as an only child and has taken a liking to playing the piano in her spare time. And besides that, still quite fresh, she has developed an interest in photography. She just finds photography "really fun"". And was thrilled by the happiness in her friend’s eyes and expression."

19,195 images from 133 countries were submitted for the Global Peace Photo Award 2023. Most of the entries came from India, China, the USA, Germany and Russia. The submissions were judged by a distinguished international jury. globalpeacephotoaward.org/jury

The Global Peace Photo Award (formerly the Alfred Fried Photography Award) is organized by Edition Lammerhuber and Photographische Gesellschaft (PHG) in partnership with UNESCO, Austrian Parliament, Austrian Parliamentary Reporting Association, International Press Institute (IPI), German Youth Photography Award, World Press Photo Foundation, POY LATAM, LensCulture, APA – Austria Presse Agentur, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh) e.V. and Vienna Insurance Group.

The prize was inspired by the Austrian pacifist and writer Alfred Hermann Fried (* 11 November 1864 in Vienna; † 4 May 1921 in Vienna). Fried was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1911 together with the organiser of the Hague Conference on Private International Law Tobias Asser.

Am 4. Oktober 2023 wurden zum elften Mal die Gewinner:innen des internationalen Fotowettbewerbs Global Peace Photo Award im Österreichischen Parlament mit der Alfred-Fried-Friedensmedaille ausgezeichnet.

Die Jury des Global Peace Photo Awards wählte aus mehr als 19.000 Einsendungen aus 133 Ländern die Arbeit "Combing Peace" der südkoreanischen Künstlerin Elrea Song für den mit 10.000 Euro dotierten Preis aus. Für das Bild hatte die Fotografin Kinder gebeten, Müll aus dem Meer zurückzuholen, um die heikle Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Natur zu zeigen. Aus dem weggeworfenen Abfall gestalteten die Kinder fast surreale Skulpturen auf dem Strand.

Trash, Abfall. Nicht nur er wird in die Meere gespült. Auch die Biographien von Menschen verschwinden im Nirgendwo, Geschichten landen auf dem Müll, Lebensleistungen in der Vergessenheit, Schicksale im ewigen Dunkel. Kriege bewirken das, Naturkatastrophen. Aber auch einfach nur die menschliche Eigenschaft der Unachtsamkeit. Die Fähigkeit zu verdrängen, was dem Leben aus unserem Planeten droht.

Wie kann man daran erinnern, um es zu ändern? Wie kann man zurückholen, was fortgeschwemmt wird? Die südkoreanische Fotografin Elrea Song alias Jiyeon Lee hat Kinder gebeten, aus dem Schwemmmaterial der Meere etwas zurückzuholen, was die heikle Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Natur, zwischen Lebensstil und Naturverbrauch zu poetisch-verrückten Bildern verdichtet. Fröhlich und traurig, alarmierend und wunderbar zugleich. Die Plastikschwemme ebenso thematisierend wie das erwünschte Willkommen für jene, die über die Meere Zuflucht suchen.

Frieden, sagt Song, kann nur vorankommen, wenn Du mir Deine Füße leihst. Und ich Dir meine. Heißt: zusammen. Und er braucht die Gemeinsamkeit unserer Hoffnungen. Und den Willen, zu retten, was sonst fortgetrieben wird.

Elrea Song, Jahrgang 1984, lebt in Daejeon, Südkorea, mit Familie und drei Nichten. Sie alle sind engagiert, den Müll von der Küste einzusammeln. Mit ihren Fotos bemühe sie sich, schreibt Song, Solidarität mit den Menschen und der Natur zu beweisen. Song hat Visual Communication Design am College of Arts studiert. Ihr Werk wurde außer in Korea auch bereits in den USA und in Italien ausgestellt und mit dem "Award for Future Artists" ausgezeichnet.

Das mit 1.000 Euro dotierte beste Friedensbild in der Kinder- und Jugendkategorie, The Children’s Peace Image of the Year 2023, gewann die 14-jährige Barbare Chikviladze aus Georgien mit ihrem Bild "Water Fun".

Warum ist das prämierte Bild ein Friedensbild für die 14-jährige Barbare Chikviladze aus der georgischen Hauptstadt Tiflis? Weil, schreibt sie uns, sie zwar noch jung sei. Sehr wohl aber wisse, dass 20 Prozent ihres Landes von Russland okkupiert sei. Frieden aber mit Freiheit zu tun habe. Und Freiheit glücklich mache. So glücklich wie ihre Freundin in diesem Moment in einem Sommergarten in Rustavi, als Barbare auf den Auslöser drückte. Jedes Kind, hat sie uns geschrieben, verdiene es, glücklich zu sein und in einem friedlichen Land zu leben.

Barbare, deren Mutter Philologin ist und in einer Versicherung arbeitet und deren Vater Anwalt ist, wächst als Einzelkind auf und hat in ihrer Freizeit Gefallen am Klavierspiel gefunden. Und daneben, noch recht frisch, Interesse am Fotografieren entwickelt. Sie findet das Fotografieren einfach richtig lustig. Und war von der Fröhlichkeit in den Augen und im Gesicht ihrer Freundin begeistert.

Zum Global Peace Photo Award 2023 wurden 19.195 Bilder aus 133 Ländern eingereicht. Die meisten Einreichungen kamen aus Indien, China, USA, Deutschland und Russland. Juriert wurden die Einreichungen von einer hochkarätigen, internationalen Jury: globalpeacephotoaward.org/jury

Neben der Vergabe des "Friedensbild des Jahres" an Elrea Song gingen Alfred-Fried-Friedensmedaillen 2023 an: Ghassane Kaaibich, Carla Kogelman, Nuria López Torres und Marina Sycheva.

Der Global Peace Photo Award wird in Kooperation von Edition Lammerhuber, Photographischer Gesellschaft (PHG), UNESCO, Österreichischem Parlament, der Vereinigung der Parlamentsredakteurinnen und -redakteure, des Internationalen Press Institute (IPI), des Deutschen Jugendfotopreises, World Press Photo Foundation, POY LATAM, LensCulture, der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh), Vienna Insurance Group und der APA ausgelobt.

Inspiriert wurde der Preis von dem österreichischen Pazifisten und Schriftsteller Alfred Hermann Fried (* 11. November 1864 in Wien; † 4. Mai 1921 in Wien). Fried wurde 1911 gemeinsam mit dem Organisator der Haager Konferenz für Internationales Privatrecht Tobias Asser der Friedensnobelpreis verliehen.
