Auction 1232: Classical Photography

No fewer than six works by Robert Mapplethorpe will be offered this season. Particularly noteworthy are two nude studies of the model "Ajitto" crouching on a pedestal in an aesthetic back and side view as lifetime prints from 1981, both in excellent condition (lot 716/717, € 10/15,000 each). The four rare gelatin silver prints of famous motifs by Helmut Newton, including "Ernesto Esposito and Frederica della Volpe in my Hotel Room, Montecatini, Italy" from 1988 (lot 722, € 15/20,000) and "Fat Hand and Dollars, Monte Carlo" from 1986 (lot 724, € 6/8,000), come from the same southern German private collection as well. The latter - like Albert Watson's "Monkey with Gun, New York" (lot 748, € 4/5,000) - a subtle, aesthetically packaged social critique.

The earliest highlight of the auction is an albumen print by Charles Marville ("Percement avenue de l'Opéra, Paris") from 1876, in which Charles Garnier's new Paris Opera House can be seen in the background as a symbol of the magnificent architecture of the Second Empire. From 1858 until his death, Marville documented the urban redevelopment of the capital under the direction of Georges-Eugène Baron Haussmann on behalf of the city of Paris (lot 600, € 5/6,000).

A thematic equivalent to this is August Sander's project 'Köln wie es war' (Cologne as it was), a documentation of a city in its 'old' state prior to its transformation or destruction in the war, from which the present Rhine panorama with cathedral originates. It is a signed vintage print in its original frame from 1939 (lot 611, € 6/8,000). Also noteworthy is the likewise signed vintage print of the "Malermeister", which Sander selected for his 'Menschen des Zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts' (People of the 20th Century). The print comes from the sitter's family (lot 608, € 4/5,000).

Albert Renger-Patzsch, whose works from various creative periods are offered in this auction, produced a 1931 new-objective view of the tracks of an industrial plant near Oberhausen as a warm-toned gelatin silver print on velvety baryta paper, printed presumably around 1950 (lot 626, € 8/10,000).

Man Ray's "Erotique voilée" from the famous series of 1931, with Meret Oppenheim and Louis Marcoussis as actors at the printing press, represents the classic photography of the 1930s in France with a well-preserved print from the 1960s (lot 617, € 4/5,000). The "Couple d'Amoureux", captured by Brassaï in an intimate moment on one of the streets of Paris at night, dates from the same period, offered here as a high-gloss gelatin silver print from the 1960s (lot 615, € 5/7,000).

Fashion and glamor photography are once again a focal point of this season's offering. The ten colorful dye-transfer prints by Erwin Blumenfeld from the posthumous portfolio "Blumenfeld Color" with elegant fashion shots from the 1940s/1950s are an eye-catcher (lot 640, € 12/15,000). Richard Avedon's portrait of star model Dorothy McGowan in an extravagant outfit by Yves Saint Laurent for the fashion magazine 'Harper's Bazaar' is a vintage print from the 1960s (lot 695, € 6/8,000).

Of the numerous portraits of musicians in this auction, the most interesting ones are by Anton Corbijn (J.J. Cale, R.E.M. and Courtney Love, lots 743-745, € 6/8,000 each) and Terry O'Neill (Amy Winehouse, lot 746, € 4/5,000).

Auction 1234: Contemporary Art and Photography

Numerous high-priced works by contemporary photographers will be auctioned in the Day Sale on December 2. The top lot is the cibachrome print "Thank you Vito" by the American artist Louise Lawler. It is one of her typical photographs of arranged works of art in their secondary context of use – in a museum or, as here, in private spaces (lot 438, € 25/30,000).

With Elger Esser (lots 459-462, € 7/9,000 to € 15/20,000), Axel Hütte (lot 523, € 10/15,000), Andreas Gursky (lot 440, € 7/9,000), Boris Becker (lot 439, € 4/5,000) and Bernd and Hilla Becher (lots 326/327, € 6/8,000), many of the photographs offered on this second auction day belong to the so-called 'Düsseldorfer Schule' (Dusseldorf School of Photography). Thematically the focus is on landscape photography, including numerous large formats.

Auktion 1232: Klassische Photographie

Gleich sechs Werke von Robert Mapplethorpe kommen in dieser Saison zum Aufruf. Besonders bemerkenswert sind zwei Aktstudien des auf einem Postament kauernden Modells "Ajitto" in ästhetischer Rücken- und Seitenansicht von 1981 als Lifetime-Prints, beide in hervorragendem Zustand (Lot 716/717, jeweils € 10/15.000). Aus derselben süddeutschen Privatsammlungen stammen auch die vier raren Gelatinesilberabzüge berühmter Motive von Helmut Newton, darunter "Ernesto Esposito and Frederica della Volpe in my Hotel Room, Montecatini, Italy" von 1988 (Lot 722, 15/20.000) und "Fat Hand and Dollars, Monte Carlo" von 1986 (Lot 724, € 6/8.000). Bei letzterem Motiv handelt es sich, ebenso wie bei Albert Watsons "Monkey with Gun, New York" (Lot 748, € 4/5.000) um eine hintergründige, ästhetisch verpackte Gesellschaftskritik.

Das früheste Highlight der Auktion ist ein Albuminabzug von Charles Marville ("Percement avenue de l'Opéra, Paris") aus dem Jahr 1876, auf dem im Hintergrund die neue Pariser Oper von Charles Garnier als Symbol für die prunkvolle Architektur des Second Empire zu sehen ist. Marville dokumentierte ab 1858 bis zu seinem Tod im Auftrag der Stadt Paris die städtebauliche Umgestaltung der Kapitale unter Leitung von Georges-Eugène Baron Haussmann (Lot 600, € 5/6.000).

Eine thematische Entsprechung hierzu, als Dokumentation einer Stadt in ihrem 'alten' Zustand vor ihrer Veränderung bzw. Kriegszerstörung, ist August Sanders Projekt 'Köln wie es war', aus dem das hier vorliegende Rheinpanorama mit Dom stammt. Es handelt sich hier um einen signierten Vintage-Print im Originalrahmen aus dem Jahr 1939 (Lot 611, € 6/8.000). Bemerkenswert ist auch der ebenfalls signierte Vintage-Print des "Malermeisters", den Sander für seine 'Menschen des Zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts' auswählte. Der Abzug stammt aus dem Besitz der Familie des Dargestellten (Lot 608, € 4/5.000).

Von Albert Renger-Patzsch, von dem in dieser Auktion Arbeiten aus verschiedenen Schaffensperioden angeboten werden, stammt der neusachliche Blick auf die Gleiskörper einer Industrieanlage bei Oberhausen aus dem Jahr 1931 als warmtoniger Gelatinesilberabzug auf samtigem Barytpapier, abgezogen vermutlich um 1950 (Lot 626, € 8/10.000).

Die klassische Photographie der dreißiger Jahre in Frankreich repräsentiert Man Rays "Erotique voilée" aus der berühmten Serie von 1931 mit Meret Oppenheim und Louis Marcoussis als Darstellern an der Druckerpresse mit einem gut erhaltenen Abzug aus den sechziger Jahren (Lot 617, € 4/5.000). Aus derselben Zeit stammt auch das "Couple d’Amoureux" in einer intimen Momtentaufnahme auf einer der nächtlichen Straßen von Paris, photographisch eingefangen von Brassaï und hier als hochglänzender Gelatinesilberabzug aus den sechziger Jahren (Lot 615, € 5/7.000).

Mode- und Glamourphotographie bilden auch in dieser Saison wieder einen Schwerpunkt des Angebots. Ein Blickfang sind die zehn farbkräftigen Dye-Transfer-Prints von Erwin Blumenfeld aus dem posthum entstandenen Portfolio "Blumenfeld Color" mit eleganten Fashionaufnahmen aus den 1940er/1950er Jahren (Lot 640, € 12/15.000). Bei Richard Avedons Portrait von Starmodel Dorothy McGowan in extravagantem Outfit von Yves Saint Laurent für das Modemagazin 'Harper's Bazaar' handelt es sich um einen Vintageabzug aus den 1960er Jahren (Lot 695, € 6/8.000).

Auktion 1234: Zeitgenössische Kunst und Photographie

Zahlreiche hochpreisige Werke zeitgenössischer Photographen werden im Day Sale am 2. Dezember versteigert. Spitzenstück ist der Cibachrome-Abzug "Thank you Vito" der amerikanischen Künstlerin Louise Lawler, mit einer ihrer typischen Aufnahmen von arrangierten Kunstwerken in ihrem sekundären - musealen oder so wie hier privaten - Verwendungskontext (Lot 438, € 25/30.000).
