With vibrant colours and an extraordinary visual language, the artist Aïda Muluneh advocates awareness for currently urgent issues such as the unequal distribution of access to water, food and education, the abuse of power and the empowerment of women. Under the title AÏDA MULUNEH. ON THE EDGE OF PAST FUTURE, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt is showing seven series of works by the Ethiopian photo artist from the past ten years.

Aïda Muluneh expresses her critical concerns with artistic vitality, surreal nuances and thought-provoking soul-searching. Her pictures are visual narratives; they have a cinematic character in that she constructs sceneries on location in real landscapes or unique interiors. The models in Muluneh's settings are global and at the same time African ensemble –people with multiple identities and cultural origins. Enchanting figures might appear in business suits or traditional costumery, messengers are equipped with a shepherd's staff or a telephone. Protagonists with colourfully painted faces climb ladders to the sky, emblematic hands throughout her works protect or incite.

Primary colours, postures and props Muluneh always uses symbolically in all her photographic stagings. Red wings become the symbol of womanhood; in the series Water Life (2018), it is womanhood provide humanity with water; in Road of Glory (2020), women confront comfort with scenarios of hunger as a weapon.

Aïda Muluneh (*1974 in Addis Ababa/Ethiopia) is considered an advocate and leading voice of the African photography community and its global representation. After her family fled the civil war in Ethiopia, Muluneh grew up in Yemen, England and Canada. In 2000 she received her degree in communications with a major in film from Howard University, Washington, D.C.. Assignments as a photojournalist followed, including for the Washington Post. Muluneh is the founder and director of Addis Foto Fest, East Africa's first international photo festival, as well as Africa Foto Fair (AFF) in Ivory Coast, where she also lives. Her series Road of Glory was created as an exhibition for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.

AïDA MULUNEH. ON THE EDGE OF PAST FUTURE is the artist's most comprehensive solo show in Europe to date. It was curated by Celina Lunsford, artistic director, and Andrea Horvay, co-curator of the FFF. The exhibition opens the 40th anniversary year of the FFF at the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt.

Mit kraftvollen Farben und außergewöhnlicher Bildsprache widmet sich die Künstlerin Aïda Muluneh drängenden Themen wie dem ungleich verteilten Zugang zu Wasser, Nahrung und Bildung, dem Missbrauch von Macht sowie dem Empowerment von Frauen. Unter dem Titel AÏDA MULUNEH. ON THE EDGE OF PAST FUTURE zeigt das Fotografie Forum Frankfurt sieben Werkserien der äthiopischen Fotokünstlerin aus den vergangenen zehn Jahren.

Aïda Muluneh vermittelt ihre kritischen Anliegen mit künstlerischer Lebendigkeit, surrealen Nuancen und nachdenklich stimmender Seelensuche. Ihre Bilder wirken wie visuelle Erzählungen; fotografiert werden sie ähnlich einem Filmdreh, mit aufwändig gearbeiteten Kulissen in realer Landschaft oder konstruierten Innenräumen. Bevölkert sind Mulunehs Bildbühnen mit globalem und zugleich afrikanischem Ensemble – Menschen mit mehrfach lesbarer Identität und kultureller Herkunft.

Primärfarben, Körperhaltung und Requisiten setzt Muluneh in all ihren fotografischen Inszenierungen stets symbolhaft ein. Rot etwa beflügelt vor allem Frauen: In der Serie Water Life (2018) versorgen Frauen die Menschheit mit Wasser, in Road of Glory rütteln sie mit Szenarien vom Hunger als Waffe an verbreiteten Bequemlichkeiten.

Aïda Muluneh (*1974 in Addis Abeba/Äthiopien) gilt als Fürsprecherin und führende Stimme der afrikanischen Fotografie-Community und ihrer globalen Repräsentanz. Nach der Flucht ihrer Familie vor dem Bürgerkrieg in Äthiopien wuchs Muluneh im Jemen, in England und Kanada auf und schloss 2000 ein Kommunikationsstudium mit Schwerpunkt Film in den USA ab. Es folgten Aufträge als Fotojournalistin, u.a. für die Washington Post. Muluneh ist Gründerin und Direktorin von Addis Foto Fest, Ostafrikas erstem internationalen Fotofestival, sowie von Africa Foto Fair, einer Online-Plattform für Fotograf*innen aus Afrika. Ihre Serie Road of Glory entstand als Auftragsausstellung zum Friedensnobelpreis 2020. Die Künstlerin lebt in der Elfenbeinküste.

AïDA MULUNEH. ON THE EDGE OF PAST FUTURE ist die bislang umfangreichste Einzelschau der Künstlerin in Europa. Kuratiert wurde sie von Celina Lunsford, künstlerische Leiterin, und Andrea Horvay, Co-Kuratorin des FFF. Die Schau eröffnet das Jubiläumsjahr 40 Jahre FFF des Fotografie Forum Frankfurt.

Zur Ausstellung ist ein MAGAZIN mit einem Essay von Celina Lunsford und zahlreichen Werkabbildungen erhältlich.
