Pictures like stages: Aïda Muluneh, internationally renowned photographer, festival director and one of Africa’s leading photo-cultural voices, fascinates in her works with an exceptional visual language, powerful colours and advocacy through the narrative. In her FFF ACADEMY workshop, the artist teaches important photographic skills on composition, selecting visuals and editing. Additionally, she provides valuable insights into planning, research and technical aspects to create images with impactful visual narratives.

During the two-day workshop, participants will learn to refine their own photographic compositions, use visual elements effectively and perfect the editing and sequencing of shots. The workshop programme includes hands-on exercises, group portfolio reviews and opportunities for photographers to hone their storytelling abilities in and with images.

PLEASE NOTE: for this FFF ACADEMY workshop the FFF offers two places free of charge for students. To apply the students must send a small portfolio of 10 images by January 17th to akademie@fffrankfurt.org

Aïda Muluneh was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1974, grew up in Yemen, England and Canada and graduated in communications with a major in film in 2000 in the USA. Assignments as a photojournalist followed, including for the Washington Post. Her photography has been published and awarded widely and can be found in many international museum collections. Muluneh is the founder and director of Addis Foto Fest, East Africa's first international photo festival, as well as Africa Foto Fair (AFF) in Ivory Coast, where the artist now lives. Her series Road of Glory was created as an exhibition for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize.

Bilder wie Bühnen: Aïda Muluneh, international renommierte Fotografin, Festival-Direktorin und eine der führenden Fotostimmen Afrikas, fasziniert in ihren Arbeiten mit außergewöhnlicher Bildsprache, kraftvollen Farben und dem Einsatz erzählerischer Mittel. In ihrem FFF-AKADEMIE-Workshop vermittelt sie fotografische Fähigkeiten wie Komposition, visuelle Effekte und Redaktionsprozessen. Dazu gibt die Künstlerin wertvolle Einblicke in Planung, Recherche und technische Aspekte, um Bilder mit fesselnder Erzählkraft zu schaffen.

Während des zweitägigen Workshops lernen die Teilnehmer*innen, ihre eigenen fotografischen Kompositionen zu verfeinern, visuelle Elemente effektiv einzusetzen und die Bearbeitung und Abfolge von Aufnahmen zu perfektionieren. Das Workshop-Programm umfasst praktische Übungen, Portfoliobesprechungen in der Gruppe und Gelegenheiten für Fotograf*innen, ihre Fähigkeiten zum Geschichtenerzählen in und mit Bildern weiterzuentwickeln.

Aïda Muluneh wurde 1974 in Addis Abeba, Äthiopien, geboren, wuchs in Jemen, England und Kanada auf und schloss 2000 ein Kommunikationsstudium mit Schwerpunkt Film in den USA ab. Es folgten Aufträge als Fotojournalistin, u.a. für die Washington Post. Muluneh ist Gründerin und Direktorin von Addis Foto Fest, Ostafrikas erstem internationalen Fotofestival, sowie Africa Foto Fair (AFF) in der Elfenbeinküste, wo die Künstlerin auch lebt. Ihre Fotografien wurden vielfach veröffentlicht, ausgezeichnet und befinden sich zahlreichen internationalen Museumssammlungen. Ihre Serie Road of Glory entstand als Ausstellung zum Friedensnobelpreis 2020.
