On the occasion of her exhibition at Museum Fünf Kontinente, LEPI ARTS in Munich will be showing a photographic dialogue by artist Ann-Christine Woehrl with "WITCHES IN EXILE" and "DARKLIGHT". The exhibition focuses on isolation. The fundamental recurring theme of Ann-Christine Woehrl's work.

The perspective and approach to the two photo series could hardly be more different and thus illuminates the photographer's artistic spectrum.

Ann-Christine Woehrl mostly shows the isolation of others. She visualises women who are marginalised and threatened by society, like in the case of "WITCHES IN EXILE". The impressive portraits of women in Ghana who are stigmatised as witches draw attention to the cruel witch-hunt that still takes place today - in Ghana and other parts of the world.

"DARKLIGHT" on the other hand shows her artistic exploration of her own isolation, of pausing in times of pandemic. An ongoing project that she started during the pandemic. Poetic abstractions of nature seem more like painting than photography in the duality of light and shadow. They reflect Ann-Christine Woehrl's inner dialogue with places in silence where she encounters her feelings. These places give her peace and strength, sharpen her senses and her gaze. In resonance with nature, she processes her projects and develops new approaches.

In this way, she creates a visual language that touches. Despite the plight of the women, who are isolated and experience violence, the portraits radiate dignity and pride. They attract attention and draw attention to unbelievable grievances and hardship. "WITCHES IN EXILE" was the beginning of Ann-Christine Woehrl's commitment to women suffering from isolation and stigmatisation almost 20 years ago. Photo series such as "IN/VISIBLE" or "PEACE IS NAMED AFTER A WOMAN" followed.

With the exhibition of the photographic dialogue, Anja Pinter-Rawe (LEPI ARTS), the publisher of the monograph "WITCHES IN EXILE", is continuing her collaboration with Ann-Christine Woehrl, which began in 2013 with the first solo exhibition of the portrait series in Berlin (then as Galerie Pinter & Milch).

While the Museum Fünf Kontinente's exhibition "WITCHES IN EXILE" comprehensively presents the issue of witch-hunt in Ghana, LEPI ARTS focuses on Ann-Christine Woehrl's artistic work and commitment in the pop-up gallery. Part of the proceeds from the gallery's sales of the photographs will go to the Ghanaian NGO Outcast Support Project (formerly Witch-hunt Victims Empowerment Project), which campaigns against witch-hunt through education.

Anlässlich ihrer Ausstellung im Museum Fünf Kontinente zeigt LEPI ARTS in München mit "WITCHES IN EXILE" und "DARKLIGHT" einen fotografischen Dialog der Künstlerin Ann-Christine Woehrl. Thema ist die Isolation. Das grundlegende, wiederkehrende Sujet der Arbeit von Ann-Christine Woehrl.

Perspektive und Ansatz der beiden Fotoserien könnten unterschiedlicher kaum sein und beleuchten so das künstlerische Spektrum der Fotografin.

Meist zeigt Ann-Christine Woehrl die Isolation der anderen auf. Sie macht Frauen sichtbar, die von der Gesellschaft ausgegrenzt und bedroht werden. So auch in der Serie "WITCHES IN EXILE". Die eindrücklichen Porträts von Frauen in Ghana, die als Hexen stigmatisiert werden, machen auf grausame Hexenverfolgungen aufmerksam, die noch heute stattfinden - in Ghana und weiteren Teilen der Welt.

"DARKLIGHT" hingegen zeigt ihre künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Isolation, mit dem Innehalten. Ein Projekt, das sie in Zeiten der Pandemie begann und seitdem fortführt. Poetische Abstraktionen der Natur scheinen in der Dualität von Licht und Schatten mehr Malerei als Fotografie. Sie reflektieren den inneren Dialog von Ann-Christine Woehrl mit Orten, an denen sie in der Stille ihren Gefühlen begegnen kann. Es sind diese Orte, die ihr immer wieder Ruhe und Kraft geben, die ihre Sinne und ihren Blick schärfen. In Resonanz mit der Natur kann sie ihre Projekte verarbeiten und neue Ansätze entwickeln.

Auf diese Weise schafft sie eine Bildsprache, die berührt. Trotz der Not der Frauen, die isoliert sind und Gewalt erfahren, strahlen die Porträts Würde und Stolz aus. Sie ziehen die Blicke auf sich und schaffen Aufmerksamkeit für ungeahnte Missstände und Not. "WITCHES IN EXILE" war für Ann-Christine Woehrl vor fast 20 Jahren der Beginn ihres Engagements für Frauen, die unter Isolation und Stigmatisierung leiden. Fotoserien wie "IN/VISIBLE" oder "DER FRIEDEN TRÄGT DEN NAMEN EINER FRAU" folgten.

Mit der Ausstellung des fotografischen Dialogs setzt Anja Pinter-Rawe (LEPI ARTS), die Herausgeberin der Monografie "WITCHES IN EXILE", ihre seit 2013 bestehende Zusammenarbeit mit Ann-Christine Woehrl fort, die 2013 in Berlin mit der ersten Einzelausstellung der Porträtserie (damals als Galerie Pinter & Milch) begann.

Während das Museum Fünf Kontinente in seiner Ausstellung "WITCHES IN EXILE" das Thema Hexenverfolgung in Ghana umfassend vorstellt, fokussiert LEPI ARTS in der Pop-up Galerie das künstlerische Werk und das Engagement von Ann-Christine Woehrl.

Ein Teil der Erlöse aus dem Verkauf der Fotografien in der Galerie geht an die ghanaische NGO Outcast Support Project (ehemals Witch-hunt Victims Empowerment Project), die sich durch Aufklärungs- und Überzeugungsarbeit gegen die Hexenverfolgung einsetzt.
