The largest outdoor photography festival in Europe will take place
from 13 June until 13 October 2024.

WORLD.NATURE.HERITAGE – "Humanity has opened the gates to hell", warned Secretary- General António Guterres in an impassioned speech on the margins of the UN General Assembly in September 2023. "Our concern is that all climate action will be dwarfed by the scale of the challenge”, as humanity is heading for a temperature rise of 2.8°C.

An appeal to the world that has long been inscribed at the heart of our festival. It is our duty to preserve the poetry of creation for our children. On the fundamental issues of urbanisation, biodiversity, natural resources, environmental pollution and global warming, we will try to use images to provide, if not solutions, then at least food for thought. Therefore, in our seventh festival year, we will be showing the work of the great masters of environmental photography: Nazli Abbaspour, Evgenia Arbugaeva, Yasuhoshi Chiba, Joana Choumali, David Doubilet and Jennifer Hayes, Nadia Ferroukhi, Sacha Goldberger, Richard Ladkani, Lucas Lenci, Luca Locatelli, Pascal Maitre, Beth Moon, Maxime Riché, Sebastião Salgado, Alain Schroeder, Vee Speers, Brent Stirton, Lorraine Turci, David Turnley, Peter Turnley and Cássio Vasconcellos.

"We all need Eden as a horizon," writes Cyril Drouhet in his essay in the festival catalogue. "There was a time when we had a rainbow in our heads: We believed in the future, in progress, our dreams were full of utopias. In the third millennium, this colour has turned grey. But life needs radiant colours like in photography to enchant the world again. That is the challenge of the coming years and the challenge of our festival."

The bilateral photography project organised by the Morbihan schools in Brittany and Lower Austria is also dedicated to the theme of "Nature as Heritage" this year. We are giving young young people the opportunity to express their ideas on the challenges of today and especially of tomorrow: How can we shape social models to preserve our unique world for our children?

"We have the choice to use the gift of our lives to make the world a better place," Jane Goodall is convinced. Martin Parr, whom the festival will honour with the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award, is certainly part of this spirit of preserving rays of hope for humanity. And Luigi Caputo's pictures tell of an enchanted world, a world of magical transformations full of graceful beauty and fairytale elegance. Fascinating glimpses of the mysterious places backstage and a tribute to the artists of the Salzburg Festival. Norbert Span will show us in his pictures why snow crystals are the "Jewels of the Sky".

The exhibition of photographs by professional photographers from Lower Austria and the "Director's Cut"-exhibition by jury president Michel Comte from CEWE's "Our World is Beautiful", the world's largest photo competition with over 500,000 images from 170 countries, will round off the festival, as will a look back at 2023 in the images of artist in residence Ina Künne, whose pictures are accompanied by texts by 2022 Thomas Jorda Award winner Raphaela Edelbauer. A very special visual highlight is the exhibition "The Human Footprint", images from orbit, prepared by Gerald Mansberger and Markus Eisl.

Under the guiding principle of Culture of Solidarity, the collaboration with festival partners Garten Tulln and Month of Photography Bratislava will also be continued in 2024.

WELT.NATUR.ERBE – "Die Menschheit hat die Tore zur Hölle geöffnet", warnte Generalsekretär António Guterres in einer leidenschaftlichen Rede am Rande der UN-Generalversammlung im September 2023 vor Politikern, Unternehmern und Aktivisten eindringlich vor den schrecklichen Folgen von zunehmend extremeren Wetterereignissen. "Unsere Sorge ist groß, dass alle Klimamaßnahmen vom Ausmaß der Herausforderung in den Schatten gestellt werden", da die Menschheit auf einen Temperaturanstieg von
2,8°C zusteuert.

Ein Appell an die Welt, der längst ins Herz unseres Festivals eingeschrieben ist. Es ist unsere Pflicht, die Poesie der Schöpfung unseren Kindern zu bewahren. Zu den grundlegenden Fragen der Urbanisierung, der Artenvielfalt, der natürlichen Ressourcen, der Umweltver- schmutzung oder der Klimaerwärmung werden wir versuchen, mit Hilfe von Bildern wenn schon nicht Lösungen, so doch zumindest Denkanstöße zu geben. Daher zeigen wir in unserem siebten Festivaljahr die Arbeiten der großen Meister der Umweltfotografie: Nazli Abbaspour, Evgenia Arbugaeva, Yasuhoshi Chiba, Joana Choumali, David Doubilet und Jennifer Hayes, Nadia Ferroukhi, Sacha Goldberger, Richard Ladkani, Lucas Lenci, Luca Locatelli, Pascal Maitre, Beth Moon, Maxime Riché, Alain Schroeder, Vee Speers, Brent Stirton, Lorraine Turci, David Turnley, Peter Turnley und Cássio Vasconcellos.

"Wir alle brauchen Eden als Horizont", schreibt Cyril Drouhet in seinem Essay des Festivalkatalogs. "Es gab eine Zeit, in der wir einen Regenbogen im Kopf hatten: Wir glaubten an die Zukunft, an den Fortschritt, unsere Träume waren voll Utopien. Im dritten Jahrtausend hat sich diese Farbe in ein Grau verwandelt. Aber das Leben braucht strahlende Farbtöne wie in der Fotografie, um die Welt wieder zu verzaubern. Das ist die Herausforderung der kommenden Jahre und die Herausforderung unseres Festivals."

Auch das bilaterale Fotoprojekt der Schulen des Morbihan in der Bretagne und in Niederösterreich ist dieses Jahr dem Thema "Die Natur als Erbe" gewidmet. Wir geben jungen Menschen die Möglichkeit, ihre Ideen zu den Herausforderungen von heute und vor allem von morgen zu äußern: Wie können wir Gesellschaftsmodelle gestalten, um unsere einzigarte Welt für unsere Kinder zu bewahren?

"Wir haben die Wahl, das Geschenk unseres Lebens zu nutzen, um die Welt zu einem besseren Ort zu machen", ist Jane Goodall überzeugt. In diesem Geist, Lichtblicke der Menschlichkeit zu bewahren, steht gewiss Martin Parr, den das Festival mit dem erstmals vergebenen Lifetime Achievement Award ehren wird. Erich Lessing, so wie Parr Mitglied der Agentur Magnum, werden wir anlässlich seines 100. Geburtstages mit einer großen Retrospektive feiern. Und Norbert Span, zeigt uns in seinen Bildern, warum Schneekristalle die "Juwelen des Himmels" sind.

Die Ausstellung der Fotografien der niederösterreichischen Berufsfotograf:innen und die Ausstellung "Director’s Cut" von Jurypresident Michel Comte des mit über 500 000 Bildern aus 170 Ländern größten Fotowettbewerbes der Welt CEWEs "Our World is Beautiful" werden das Festival ebenso abrunden wie die Rückschau auf 2023 in den Bildern der Artist in Residence Ina Künne, deren Bilder von Texten der Thomas-Jorda-Preisträgerin 2022 Raphaela Edelbauer begleitet werden. Ein ganz besonderes visuelles Highlight ist die Ausstellung "The Human Footprint", Bilder aus dem Orbit, aufbereitet von Gerald Mansberger und Markus Eisl.

Unter dem Leitgedanken Culture of Solidarity wird die Zusammenarbeit mit den Festivalpartnern Garten Tulln, Celje in Slowenien und Monat der Fotografie Bratislava auch 2024 fortgesetzt werden.
