The outstanding oeuvre of Paloma Navarés (Burgos, 1947), the 2024 Fundación ENAIRE Career Award winner, reflects different inquiry processes in which she explores social themes, particularly the world of women, their rites, customs and traditions; internal emotions and their extremes (including madness and suicide); the passage of time; the ideal image of the social individual; the issue of corporal beauty; and death.
From the very beginning, her artistic language has been sustained on interdisciplinary practices and the quest for a climax in the mise-en-scène of her exhibitions, along with the assemblage of techniques and media and the use of industrial materials. She also incorporates other languages, such as contemporary dance, corporal expression and literature. Photography, video, sound and light all merge in her installations, sculptures, objects, collages or set designs.
The exhibition Light of Intuition takes pieces from different stages in her career, in which she delicately yet forcefully shows how what is innocent intuition for her becomes an intense reality. Without prior intentionality, her works are laden with an overwhelming gender discourse which both made her a pioneer at the start of her career and keeps her relevant today. The selection of works in this show suggests a survey of her entire career: from the appropriations of women in classical art to inspiration from nature as a driving force behind her messages, to self-references and finally the use of artificial intelligence.
