Auction 1246 Classical Photography

A highlight of museum quality is the early interference colour photograph by Dr. Richard Neuhauss from 1901. The Berlin medical doctor and anthropologist was also a pioneer in the exploration of photographic processes. He took up the process developed by the Luxembourg physicist Gabriel Lippmann, presented to the Paris Academy of Sciences in 1894 and named after him, in order to further develop it for his own research purposes. The "self-portrait" from 1901 shows Neuhauss in a checked housecoat, a particularly suitable accessory for his photographic purposes (lot 501, estimate € 6/8000).

The transition to classical photography of the first half of the 20th century takes the form of a vintage print of a leaf study: "Silphium Laciniatum (Compass Plant)" by Karl Blossfeldt, in excellent condition (lot 506, € 20/25,000). Alfred Ehrhardt's large-format vintage print "Sandformen, Kurische Nehrung", also in very good condition, is exemplary of his New Objectivity photographs of natural forms and structures in the 1930s (lot 505, € 2500/3000). "Mädchen im Kirmeswagen" by August Sander, here as a print by Gunther Sander, is one of the most sought-after motifs of Sander's opus People of the Twentieth Century (lot 503, € 3500/4000). A series of photographs by Albert Renger-Patzsch - above all his famous "Bäumchen" from 1929 as a large-format vintage print (lot 507, € 40/50,000) - show various facets of his New Objectivity landscape photography of the pre-war and immediate post-war years (lots 510-513, from € 2500/3000 to 3500/4000).

Aenne Biermann's youthful portrait of her daughter "Helga", a high-quality vintage print from around 1930 (lot 529, € 8/10,000), is almost iconic for the photography of Neues Sehen (New Vision), whilst "Self-Portrait with Leica" by Ilse Bing from 1931 epitomises the image of the modern woman in the Weimar Republic, here in the form of a later print by Abe Frajndlich (lot 528, € 3/4000). Bauhaus Photography forms a special thematic focus of the auction, with works by various photographers from two private collections. Of particular note are the architectural photographs of Bauhaus buildings by T. Lux Feininger (lots 517/520, € 2000/2500 and 3/4000) and Lucia Moholy (lot 522, € 2500/3000), as well as the latter's subject photographs of Bauhaus designs (lots 521/524, € 1800/2000 and € 4/5000 respectively).

The large-format photograph of an anti-war collage "Niemals wieder!" (Never again!) by John Heartfield in the form of a GDR poster design is an impressive period document from 1959, which emerged from various earlier versions from 1930-32 (lot 548, € 2500/3000). The works of Peter Keetman are representative of the contemporaneous West German post-war photography, with eight works on offer, including a "Self-portrait" and the famous "Schallplatte" as a vintage print (lots 560/561, € 1800/2000 and € 2500/3000 respectively). The non-figurative gelatin silver paintings by Chargesheimer, two of which are in the auction (lots 580/581, € 2500/3000 each), form an artistic counterpoint to Keetman's fotoform photography.

US American photography of the second half of the 20th century is represented in this catalogue by big names and famous motifs. A piece of scientific photography by Berenice Abbott, for example, is offered in aesthetic perfection: "Van De Graaff Generator, Cambridge/MA" from 1958 as a large-format gelatin silver print (lot 556, € 5/6000). The name Joel Meyerowitz is synonymous with New Colour photography in the USA, represented by a rare vintage contact print of "Red Interior, Provincetown" from 1977 (lot 604, € 3/4000). Robert Mapplethorpe portrayed his favourite model "Phillip Prioleau" in 1979 seated on a pedestal in various positions. The gelatin silver print offered here shows the back view of the artist's muse (lot 597, € 8/10,000). For the photograph "Schiaparelli Jacket with Tinsel and Glass" - here as a platinum-palladium print - Irving Penn created a surrealistic-looking portrait by arranging a figurine and exhibits from an exhibition on haute couture of the 1920s and 1930s at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (lot 606, € 10/15,000). In the humorous double portrait "Lady Bartender at Home with a Souvenir Dog, New Orleans, LA" from 1964, Diane Arbus shows a bartender in her domestic ambience (lot 596, € 12/15,000).

Fashion and glamour photography round off this season's offerings once again. Albert Watson offers a back nude of "Kate Moss, Marrakech" from 1993 (lot 664, € 4/5000), whilst Peter Lindbergh shows a fragile "Nadja Auermann" in the Mojave Desert in California (lot 665, € 12/15,000).

A large-format exterior view of Hamburg's "Elbphilharmonie" by the architects Herzog & de Meuron by Candida Höfer will be called as part of the Evening Sale following the Photography Auction (lot 47, € 40/50,000). Further high-priced works by contemporary photographers will be auctioned the following day in the Day Sale on 5th June, including three portraits of famous pop icons by Bettina Rheims (lots 418-420, € 10/15,000 each), the replica of a "Fotoecke/Photobooth" in a GDR prison by Thomas Demand (lot 406, € 25/30,000) and the large-format lightbox "Saturday Night", in which the Korean photographer Kim In Sook assembled 66 different nocturnal scenarios under a house roof using a montage technique (lot 426, € 25/30,000).

Auktion 1246 Klassische Photographie

Ein Highlight von musealem Rang ist die frühe Interferenz-Farbphotographie von Dr. Richard Neuhauss aus dem Jahr 1901. Der Berliner Arzt und Anthropologe war zugleich ein Pionier der Entwicklung photographischer Verfahren. Er griff das von dem luxemburgischen Physiker Gabriel Lippmann entwickelte, 1894 der Pariser Akademie der Wissenschaften präsentierte und nach ihm benannte Verfahren auf, um es für seine Forschungszwecke weiterzuentwickeln. Das "Selbstportrait" von 1901 zeigt Neuhauss in einem karierten Hausmantel, einem für den photographischen Zweck besonders geeigneten Accessoire (Lot 501, € 6/8.000).

Die Überleitung zur klassischen Photographie der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts bildet der Vintageabzug einer Blattstudie "Silphium Laciniatum (Kompasspflanze)" von Karl Blossfeldt in exzellentem Zustand (Lot 506, € 20/25.000). Alfred Ehrhardts ebenfalls sehr gut erhaltener, großformatiger Vintageabzug "Sandformen, Kurische Nehrung" steht exemplarisch für dessen neusachliche Photographien von Naturformen und -strukturen in den dreißiger Jahren (Lot 505, € 2.5/3.000). Das "Mädchen im Kirmeswagen" von August Sander, hier als Abzug von Gunther Sander, gehört zu den begehrten Motiven von Sanders Menschen des Zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts (Lot 503, € 3.5/4.000). Eine Reihe von Photographien von Albert Renger-Patzsch - allen voran sein berühmtes "Bäumchen" aus dem Jahr 1929 als großformatiger Vintageabzug (Lot 507, € 40.000 50.000) - zeigen verschiedene Facetten seiner neusachlichen Landschaftsphotographie der Vor- und unmittelbaren Nachkriegsjahre (Lot 510-513, von € 2.5/3.000 bis 3.5/4.000).

Geradezu ikonisch für die Photographie des Neuen Sehens ist das Jugendportrait der Tochter "Helga" von Aenne Biermann, um 1930 entstanden, ein qualitätvoller Vintageabzug (Lot 529, € 8/10.000). Das "Selbstportrait mit Leica" von Ilse Bing aus dem Jahr 1931 steht für das Bild der modernen Frau in der Weimarer Republik, hier ein späterer Abzug von Abe Frajndlich (Lot 528, € 3/4.000). Einen besonderen thematischen Schwerpunkt der Auktion bildet die Bauhaus-Photographie mit Werken verschiedener Photographen aus zwei Privatsammlungen. Hervorzuheben sind die Architekturaufnahmen von Bauhausgebäuden von T. Lux Feininger (Lot 517/520, € 3/4.000 bzw. € 2/2.500) und Lucia Moholy (Lot 522, € 2.5/3.000) sowie von letzterer die Sachaufnahmen von Bauhausentwürfen (Lot 521/524, € 1.800/2.000 bzw. € 4/5.000).

Ein beeindruckendes Zeitdokument ist die großformatige Photographie einer Antikriegs-Collage "Niemals wieder!" von John Heartfield als DDR-Plakatentwurf von 1959, hervorgegangen aus verschiedenen früheren Fassungen seit 1930-32 (Lot 548, € 2.5/3.000). Für die zeitgleich entstandene westdeutsche Nachkriegsphotographie stellvertretend seien die Werke von Peter Keetman genannt, von dem acht Werke zum Aufruf kommen, darunter ein "Selbstportrait" und die berühmte "Schallplatte" als Vintageabzug (Lot 560/561, € 1.8/2.000 bzw. € 2.5/3.000). Einen künstlerischen Gegenansatz zu Keetmans fotoform-Photographie bilden die ungegenständlichen Gelatinesilbermalereien von Chargesheimer, von denen zwei in der Auktion zum Aufruf kommen (Lot 580/581, jeweils € 2.5/3.000).

Die US-amerikanische Photographie der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts ist mit großen Namen und berühmten Motiven in diesem Katalog vertreten: Von Berenice Abbott wird ein Stück Wissenschaftsphotographie in ästhetischer Perfektion angeboten: "Van De Graaff Generator, Cambridge/MA" von 1958 als großformatiger Gelatinesilberabzug (Lot 556, € 5/6.000). Der Name Joel Meyerowitz steht für die New Color-Photographie in den USA. Bei dem Abzug "Red Interior, Provincetown" von 1977 handelt es sich um einen seltenen Vintage-Kontaktabzug des Motivs (Lot 604, € 3/4.000). Robert Mapplethorpe portraitierte sein Lieblingsmodel "Phillip Prioleau" 1979 in verschiedenen Positionen auf einem Sockel sitzend. Der hier angebotene Gelatinesilberabzug zeigt die Rückenansicht der Künstlermuse (Lot 597, € 8/10.000). Für die Aufnahme "Schiaparelli Jacket with Tinsel and Glass" – hier als Platin-Palladium-Abzug – arrangierte Irving Penn eine Figurine und Exponate einer Ausstellung über die Haute Couture der zwanziger und dreißiger Jahre im Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York zu einem surrealistisch anmutenden Portrait (Lot 606, € 10/15.000). Diane Arbus zeigt in dem humorvollem Doppelportrait "Lady Bartender at Home with a Souvenir Dog, New Orleans, LA" von 1964 eine Barkeeperin in ihrem häuslichen Ambiente (Lot 596, € 12/15.000).

Mode- und Glamourphotographie runden das Angebot auch in dieser Saison wieder ab. Von Albert Watson stammt der Rückenakt der "Kate Moss, Marrakech" von 1993 (Lot 664, € 4/5.000), Peter Lindbergh zeigt eine zerbrechliche "Nadja Auermann" in der Mojave-Wüste in Kalifornien (Lot 665, € 12/15.000).

Auktion 1247 / 1248 Zeitgenössische Kunst und Photographie

Eine großformatige Außenansicht der Hamburger "Elbphilharmonie" der Architekten Herzog & de Meuron von Candida Höfer wird im Rahmen des Evening Sales im Anschluss an die Photographie-Auktion aufgerufen (Lot 47, € 40/50.000). Weitere hochpreisige Werke zeitgenössischer Photographen werden am darauffolgenden Tag im Day Sale am 5. Juni versteigert, unter anderem drei Portraits berühmter Popikonen von Bettina Rheims (Lot 418-420, jeweils € 10/15.000), die Nachbildung einer "Fotoecke/Photobooth" in einem DDR-Gefängnis von Thomas Demand (Lot 406, € 25/30.000) sowie die großformatige Lightbox "Saturday Night", bei der die koreanische Photographin Kim In Sook im Montageverfahren 66 verschiedene nächtliche Szenarien unter einem Hausdach versammelt hat (Lot 426, € 25/30.000).
