From a list of over eighty nominations, the Jury has selected four finalists on the basis of a body of work which has made a significant contribution to the medium of photography in the past year. “The work of the four finalists of the Citibank Photography Prize 2003, Jitka Hanzlová, Bertien van Manen, Simon Norfolk and Juergen Teller, all use photography to record the world around them. Their work signals a return to a more documentary approach that is now in ascendance in contemporary photography. Social engagement is the underlying theme. Among the work of the finalists, there are portrayals of different communities in Britain and in China; a harrowing study of the landscape of war in Afghanistan; and a new take on fashion photography combined with family portraiture.
