In its exhibition "Oliver Abraham. Portraits of Artists", the Julian Sander Gallery will present a selection of works by photographer Oliver Abraham. The term "artists" is broadly defined: In addition to visual artists such as Ed Ruscha, Gilbert and George, Richard Serra and Taryn Simon, as well as other creative minds from other areas of artistic production, such as the musician Patti Smith, the recently deceased filmmaker David Lynch and the curator Kasper König, who also died last year.

Oliver Abraham, who graduated in 2004 as a master student of Arno Fischer at the Berlin school "Fotografie am Schiffbauerdamm", took his first artist portrait at the end of the 1990s, with a Rollei medium format camera. Since then he has continued to develop his series, and since 2004 has been photographing with an 8x10 inch large format camera. The earliest photograph in this exhibition dates from this time, a portrait of the painter, filmmaker and actress Martha Parsey, to whom Abraham is now married. The portrait of his teacher Arno Fischer was created in the same year. While in these two cases the subjects are closely linked to the photographer's personal life and career, his decision as to whom to photograph is fundamentally based on his fascination with the artists and their specific work, as well as his examination of their life stories.

Abraham regularly travels around Europe by car with heavy equipment and captures the subjects of his portraits in close proximity, usually with just a few frames, against a neutral background using natural light. The latter is of particular importance to him, as he himself emphasizes: "The natural light creates different situations for each portrait, making each session a unique, non-reproducible event." Unforeseen elements, such as the incidence of light caused by a faulty bellows on his camera in the portrait of David Lynch, make Oliver Abraham's works an exciting mixture of the planned and the accidental. At the same time, they emphasize the craftsmanship of his strictly analogue process.

Curator Jean-Christoph Amman once noted in a text about the photographer: "Oliver Abraham achieves something unusual. He creates the identity of image and person. [....] With [him] it is not the person, their fame, that comes to the fore, but the image. [...] Whoever the celebrities may be, it is the images that leave you speechless. [...] The images are so strong that the people recede behind them".

In ihrer Ausstellung "Oliver Abraham. Portraits of Artists" zeigt die Galerie Julian Sander eine Auswahl an Werken des Fotografen Oliver Abraham. Der Begriff "Artists" ist dabei weit gefasst: Neben Bildenden KünstlerInnen wie Ed Ruscha, Gilbert and George, Richard Serra und Taryn Simon begegnen sich in der von Künstler und Galerist kuratierten Schau auch weitere kreative Köpfe aus anderen Bereichen des künstlerischen Schaffens, so die Musikerin Patti Smith, der jüngst verstorbene Filmemacher David Lynch und der ebenfalls im letzten Jahr verstorbene Kurator Kasper König.

Oliver Abraham, der 2004 sein Studium als Meisterschüler bei Arno Fischer an der Berliner Schule "Fotografie am Schiffbauerdamm" abschloss, nahm sein erstes Künstlerportrait bereits Ende der 1990er Jahre auf, damals noch mit einer Rollei Mittelformatkamera. Seitdem entwickelte er seine Serie konstant weiter, seit 2004 fotografiert er mit einer 8x10 Inch Großformatkamera. Aus dieser Zeit datiert die früheste Aufnahme dieser Ausstellung, ein Portrait der Malerin, Filmemacherin und Schauspielerin Martha Parsey, mit der Abraham heute verheiratet ist. Im gleichen Jahr entsteht das Portrait seines Lehrers Arno Fischer. Sind in diesen beiden Fällen die Dargestellten eng mit dem persönlichen Leben und Werdegang des Fotografen verbunden, so basiert seine Entscheidung darüber, wen er fotografiert, grundsätzlich auf der Faszination für die KünstlerInnen und ihre spezifische Arbeit sowie der Auseinandersetzung mit ihrer Lebensgeschichte.

Regelmäßig bereist er mit Auto und schwerem Equipment Europa und hält bei diesen Reisen, zumeist in nur wenigen Bildern, die Portraitierten aus naher Distanz, vor neutralem Hintergrund und bei natürlichem Licht fest. Letzteres ist für ihn, wie er selbst betont, von besonderer Bedeutung: "Das natürliche Licht sorgt bei jedem Portrait für andere Situationen, wodurch jede Sitzung zu einem einmaligen, nicht reproduzierbaren Ereignis wird." Unvorhergesehene Elemente wie etwa der von einem nicht ganz korrekt verschlossenen Balgen seiner alten Kamera hervorgerufene Lichteinfall bei dem Portrait David Lynchs machen Oliver Abrahams Arbeiten zu spannenden Ergebnissen aus Geplantem und Zufälligem. Zugleich betonen sie das Handwerkliche seiner rein analogen Arbeit.

Der Kurator Jean-Christoph Amman notierte einst in einem Text über den Fotografen: "Oliver Abraham gelingt etwas Ungewöhnliches. Er schafft die Identität von Bild und Person. [….] Bei [ihm] tritt nicht die Person, ihre Berühmtheit, in den Vordergrund, sondern das Bild. […] Wer immer die Berühmtheiten sein mögen, es sind die Bilder, die einen sprachlos machen. […] Die Bilder sind so stark, dass die Personen hinter sich zurücktreten".
