Stills Gallery is pleased to present Brook Andrew's first solo exhibition in Sydney. Brook Andrew is an interdisciplinary artist who works conceptually with installation, digital media, photography, sound, performance, film & neon. His artworks deal with contemporary global culture, drawing attention to issues such as identity, race, consumption, celebrity and politics. In this exhibition Andrew will be presenting three bodies of work; Kalar Midday, The Indian Series and recent neons.

The works in Kalar Midday - the land of three rivers - present a re-imagining of blackness. From the depths of these luscious and dark cibachrome works emerge landscapes and figures. The viewer feels almost to be intruding on this space and these people.

The Indian Series, created during an Asialink residency in Delhi, uses the sign, an integral part of our contemporary visual landscape.

The recent neon works, including an emu on a Union Jack regurgitating the letters U, S and A once again draw our attention to the collision of cultures, to our commonality yet also our differences.

Andrew has been showing his work since 1992, in exhibitions including The Post Modern Experience at the Casula Powerhouse, Western Sydney; in Blakness: Blak City Culture! at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; Oltre il Mito (Beyond Myth): Venice Biennale satellite (1999). He has had a number of significant public art commissions including for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Sydney International Airport and the Queensland Museum. His work continues to be shown nationally and internationally and is held in many private and public collections.
