The internationally acclaimed British artist and filmmaker Lee Shulman & The Anonymous Project is making his debut in Luxembourg with a selection from his series Vitraux, which reimagines life in Bourglinster Castle (Château de Bourglinster). Anonymous people in found photographs emerge as protagonists in sacred narratives, captured within the stained glass windows created by the artist. This transformation reflects on the exhibition space, shifting it from a sterile “white cube” into an inviting shrine for all people. Shulman’s photographic work resembles iconic public sculptures, blurring the boundaries between artistic disciplines, diminishing the power dynamics between subject and object, thereby reshaping our perceptions of sacred spaces and of contemporary art. As he constructs each “vitrail,” Shulman takes the audience on a journey that extends back to the 11th-century origins of Bourglinster Castle. Ordinary anonymous figures in daily life are elevated to sacred characters as Shuman merges this medieval technique with contemporary photography, enriching his narrative with Biblical symbolism
