Born in Chile in 1956, Jaar studied architecture and filmmaking before moving to New York in 1982 where he lives and works. His practice is based on in-depth research focusing on social and economic imbalances. He is known for installations in different media that appeal to all five senses. Rather than condemning anyone, This artist aspires to a society in which everyone can live with dignity. This attitude underlies Jaar's work that quietly and powerfully appeals to us and always poses the question: how should we live together? He powerfully suggests that we should not deny the existence of others with different values, and that each of us has the responsibility of learning how to look and think. Jaar's attitude and works have been highly acclaimed internationally. Among numerous previous honors, in 2018 he was awarded the Hiroshima Art Prize, with a commemorative exhibition at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art in 2023. This exhibition is his first solo exhibition at a museum in Tokyo.
