"World's ends"

Exhibition: 15 September 2025 – 31 May 2026

Since 2018, Karin Schmuck's long-term project World’s Ends has been dedicated to places that were considered the ‘ends of the world’ in ancient times. It is conceived as a personal odyssey spanning about a decade and combines hiking, photography and research on myths, history and the present. Each stage consists of several days (or even weeks) of walking through historically charged landscapes and culminates in a separate cycle of works.

The journey began in 2019 at the Strait of Gibraltar - a place that symbolises departure and migration. Two years later, it continued to the Strait of Messina, where the focus was on the experience of the dilemma between two extremes. In 2022, the route led to the coast of Galicia, the legendary ‘end of the world’, marked by questions of new beginnings, transience and fertility. Finally, in 2023, the focus was on the Bosphorus, that unique connection between Europe and Asia, which builds bridges between cultures and continues to play an important role as a place of exchange and mediation. In 2025, the westernmost point of the European mainland, where the ancient Romans worshipped the ocean and the sun. The sixth stage is planned for 2026 around the Strait of Sicily.

The photographic works combine walking and seeing into an act of recognition: through slow hiking, Karin Schmuck appropriates the landscapes, linking them to ancient myths, contemporary literature and personal experience. The result is images that oscillate between reality and symbolism, while at the same time raising questions about borders, migration, loss and new beginnings.

World's Ends continues to grow with each stage. Photography is not only used for documentation, but also becomes a means of making experiences, stories and moods visible. Viewers are presented with images that interweave past and present, reveal boundaries and transitions, and invite them to pause and reflect. They encourage viewers to take a closer look, to connect the places with their own questions - and perhaps to see the world a little differently.

Karin Schmuck (* 1981), lives and works in Bolzano (Italy). She studied painting in Urbino (Italy) and photography in Bologna (Italy). She has won several awards and exhibited in Germany and abroad. For several years, the artist has been working on long-term projects that take her on foot to borders and remote places, resulting in photographic works, drawings and multimedia installations.

Karin Schmucks Langzeitprojekt World’s Ends widmet sich seit 2018 jenen Orten, die in der Antike als "Enden der Welt" galten. Es ist als persönliche Odyssee über etwa ein Jahrzehnt angelegt und verbindet Wanderungen, Fotografie und Recherche zu Mythen, Geschichte und Gegenwart. Jede Etappe besteht aus mehrtägigen (auch mehrwöchigen) Fußmärschen entlang historisch aufgeladener Landschaften und mündet in einen eigenen Werkzyklus.

Die Reise begann 2019 an die Meerenge von Gibraltar - ein Ort, der für Aufbruch und Migration steht. Zwei Jahre später ging es an die Straße von Messina, wo die Erfahrung des Dilemmas zwischen zwei Extremen im Mittelpunkt stand. 2022 führte der Weg an die Küste Galiciens, das sagenumwobene "Ende der Welt", geprägt von Fragen nach Neubeginn, Vergänglichkeit und Fruchtbarkeit. 2023 stand schließlich der Bosporus im Zentrum, jene einzigartige Verbindung von Europa und Asien, die Brücken zwischen Kulturen schlägt und bis heute eine wichtige Rolle als Ort des Austauschs und der Vermittlung spielt. 2025 der westlichste Punkt des europäischen Festlandes, wo bereits die antiken Römer dem Ozean und der Sonne huldigten. Für 2026 ist die 6. Etappe rund um die Straße von Sizilien geplant.

Die fotografischen Arbeiten verbinden Gehen und Sehen zu einem Akt der Erkenntnis: durch das langsame Erwandern eignet sich Karin Schmuck die Landschaften an, verknüpft sie mit antiken Mythen, zeitgenössischer Literatur und persönlicher Erfahrung. So entstehen Bilder, die zwischen Realität und Symbolik oszillieren und zugleich Fragen nach Grenzen, Migration, Verlust und Neubeginn stellen.

World’s Ends wächst mit jeder Etappe weiter. Die Fotografie dient dabei nicht nur der Dokumentation, sondern wird zu einem Mittel, Erfahrungen, Geschichten und Stimmungen sichtbar zu machen. Für die Betrachter:innen öffnen sich Bilder, die Vergangenheit und Gegenwart verweben, Grenzen und Übergänge sichtbar machen und zum Innehalten einladen. Sie fordern dazu auf, genauer hinzuschauen, die Orte mit den eigenen Fragen zu verbinden - und die Welt vielleicht ein Stück weit anders zu sehen.

Karin Schmuck (* 1981), lebt und arbeitet in Bozen (Italien). Studium der Malerei in Urbino (IT) und der Fotografie in Bologna (IT). Trägerin verschiedener Preise, Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland. Seit einigen Jahren beschäftigt sich die Künstlerin mit Langzeitprojekten, die sie zu Fuß an Grenzen und entlegene Orte führen, woraus Fotoarbeiten, Zeichnungen und multimediale Installationen entstehen.
