Twenty-five years on from its premier, Rocket exhibits one of Martin Parr’s (UK, born 1952) most celebrated and iconic series – "Think of England" is a comic, opinionated, colour-saturated series of photographs about the character of England.
The series was shot in the late 1990s and incorporates Parr’s related projects on "West Bay", "British Food" and "Flowers". His tour of the clichés of England takes in such subjects as seaside resorts, village fetes, sporting venues and kitsch souvenirs.
"Think of England" was first exhibited at Rocket Gallery, London in 2000 and then at numerous
international galleries including Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany; Rose Gallery, Los Angeles;
Kamel Mennour Gallery, Paris; and Musee Geo-Charles, Echirolles, France. Photographs from this series have been exhibited in every major survey of Parr’s work since 2000.
Arguably Britain’s most important contemporary photographer, Martin Parr is a prolific and
popular pioneer in the worlds of photography, art and fashion.
