"untitled (note to self)"

"untitled (note to self)" uses fragmentary text images to explore aspects that oscillate between self-talk, confrontation, mantra, and cautionary plea. The work addresses topics such as the construction of identity and refers to the idea of the “self as other” as well as questions of perception, reality, and ethos. The “self” in the title as the addressee remains open to interpretation within the image motifs and notes—as an inner monologue, future self, or observing counterpart.

Coming from a primarily studio-based practice, Samuel Henne‘s current works, bring him back to a more personal and intuitive artistic process. As a singular series "untitled (note to self)" stems from an overarching work complex „cosmos“ that is ongoing since 2023.

A selection of works from "untitled (note to self)" is also on display simultaneously at the "91st Fall Exhibition" of the Kunstverein Hannover (until October 26, 2025).

The 80-page publication "Samuel Henne – untitled (note to self)" accompanying the exhibition at ad/ad brings together 50 images of the work and is published by Palm Press Publishing in a limited print run.

Samuel Henne (*1982) studied at the University of Fine Arts (HBK) in Braunschweig (with Prof. Dörte Eißfeldt). In addition to solo exhibitions at venues including the Kunstverein Hannover, Kunstverein Göttingen, Halle für Kunst Lüneburg, kjubh Kunstverein Cologne, Münchner Stadtmuseum, and Deutsches Haus of the New York University – he has participated in numerous institutional group exhibitions, including at the NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf, Deichtorhallen in Hamburg and the Goethe Institute Washington. Henne's works have received numerous awards, including "Gute Aussichten – New german Photography", the Kunstverein Hannover Prize (two year residency), a one-year residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York, and most recently a working grant from the Stiftung Kunstfonds in 2024. Henne has taught fine-art photograhy courses at the Leibniz University Hannover, the Hochschule Hannover – University of Applied Sciences & Arts, the University of Hildesheim and the Pforzheim University.

"untitled (note to self)" verhandelt in fragmentarischen Textbildern Aspekte, die zwischen Selbstgespräch, Konfrontation, Mantra und mahnendem Appell oszillieren. So thematisiert die Arbeit u.a. die Konstruktion von Identität und referiert auf die Idee des "self as other" sowie auf Fragen nach Wahrnehmung, Realität und Ethos. Das "self" im Titel als Adressat bleibt innerhalb der Bildmotive und Notizen offen deutbar – als innerer Monolog, zukünftiges Ich oder betrachtendes Gegenüber.

Von einer primär studio-basierten Arbeitsweise kommend, führen Samuel Hennes aktuelle Arbeiten ihn zurück zu einem persönlich-biografischen und intuitiven künstlerischen Prozess. Als eigenständige Serie entspringt "untitled (note to self)" dem übergreifenden Werkkomplex "cosmos", der seit 2023 fortlaufend entsteht.

Eine Auswahl von Arbeiten aus "untitled (note to self)" ist parallel ebenfalls in der 91. Herbstausstellung des Kunstverein Hannover zu sehen (bis zum 26.10.2025).

Die zur Ausstellung erscheinende 80 seitige Publikation "Samuel Henne – untitled (note to self)" versammelt 50 Bilder der Arbeit und erscheint bei Palm Press Publishing in limitierter Auflage.

Samuel Henne (*1982) studierte an der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Braunschweig und schloss sein Studium als Meisterschüler von Prof. Dörte Eißfeldt ab. Neben Einzelausstellungen u.a. im Kunstverein Hannover; Kunstverein Göttingen; Halle für Kunst Lüneburg; kjubh Kunstverein Köln; Münchner Stadtmuseum; Deutsches Haus der New York University – nahm er an zahlreichen institutionellen Gruppenausstellungen teil, u.a. im NRW-Forum, Düsseldorf; den Deichtorhallen, Hamburg und dem Goethe Institut Washington. Hennes Arbeiten sind mehrfach ausgezeichnet worden, u.a. als Preisträger von "Gute Aussichten – Junge deutsche Fotografie", mit dem Preis des Kunstverein Hannover, dem einjährigen Residenzstipendium am International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York und zuletzt einem Arbeitsstipendium der Stiftung Kunstfonds in 2024. Henne war mit Lehrtätigkeiten für künstlerische Fotografie an der Hochschule Hannover, der Universität Hannover, Universität Hildesheim und der Hochschule Pforzheim betraut.
