Dzifa Peters » Thinking Photography
In her dissertation ‘Tropes of Polarity: Visual Representation and Afrodiasporic Identities’, Dzifa Peters examines how colonial, postcolonial and Afrodiasporic identities are represented in and shaped by contemporary photography. She pays particular attention to the role of the medium in preserving memories, defining affiliations and mediating between different cultural perspectives and identities.
Dzifa Peters is an artist, junior researcher at the Research Centre for Communication and Culture and postdoctoral researcher at the Cados Católica Doctoral School, Portugal. The jury recognised her work as ‘an outstanding academic work that deals with a current topic’ and described the contribution as ‘a linguistically accentuated, differentiated and extremely well-founded text.’
Esther Gabrielle Kersley » Writing Photography
In her commentary ‘The hooded man at the computer: What are cyber images telling us?’, Esther Gabrielle Kersley examines how abstract topics such as cyber security and artificial intelligence are illustrated with the help of images. It explores the messages these images convey and the extent to which they can influence our engagement with the actual topic. Kersley is a photographer and author from London. The jury was impressed by the current relevance of the topic and the ‘communication of photographic and image-theoretical considerations to an audience beyond the professional world.’
