From November 12 – December 12, 2025, India Mahdavi's Project Room #21 presents a preview of the retrospective exhibition CAN LOVE BE A PHOTOGRAPH. 40 years of Inez & Vinoodh opening 03/20/2026 at KUNSTMUSEUM DEN HAAG in the Netherlands.
Kunstmuseum Den Haag has invited internationally renowned photography duo Inez van Lamsweerde (NL, 1963) and Vinoodh Matadin (NL, 1961) to reflect on 40 years of artistic partnership in a major retrospective exhibition.
Inez and Vinoodh have a seemingly endless capacity to explore new visual territories. In the early 1990s they were among the first practitioners to show the possibilities of digital-imaging technology as a creative and meaningful medium. They developed a signature style of visual seduction paired with provocative narratives, which infused new ideas into photography. Inez and Vinoodh became known in the early 1990s for their experiments with digital techniques and can rightly be called pioneers in the field of digital image manipulation and are equally prolific in the practice of black and white portrait photography.
Captured on location in Marfa, Texas, the featured works were among the first images shot with the iPhone 17 Pro Max as part of JOY, IN THREE PARTS, a multicity exhibition curated by Kathy Ryan, in collaboration with Apple.
In THINK LOVE., the triptych's central work, two lovers, Charles Matadin and Natalie Brumley, embrace in a passionate kiss beneath a transparent red veil. The image accentuates both the ecstasy of romantic love and the introspective nature of intimate connection.
