conceptual exercises is Ewa Partum's first comprehensive exhibition in Austria. Since the mid-1960s, the Polish artist has consciously combined feminist intentions with conceptual and aesthetic strategies. Alongside her works with letters, often staged in public spaces, and her mail art, she has used her own naked body as an artistic tool.

the touch of a woman

The exhibition presents key works by the artist. "The Legality of Space" is installed in front of the Francisco Carolinum. First shown in 1971 on Freedom Square in Łódź, the installation consists of traffic signs and self-designed mandatory and prohibitory signs, drawing attention to state control of public space. For "Change," the artist had half of her face painted as an aging woman in 1974 and posted 600 posters of this transformation around the city in 1978. In "Self-Identification" from 1980, she collaged her naked body into street scenes and, for the exhibition opening, stepped naked onto the sidewalk in front of the gallery at the exact moment when a wedding party was gathered there outside a registry office. "My touch is the touch of a woman"—this sentence appears beneath the lipstick-red lips on one of her mail art sheets from 1971, accompanied by the note "poem by ewa."

conceptual exercises ist Ewa Partums erste umfassende Ausstellung in Österreich. Die polnische Künstlerin verband seit Mitte der 1960er- Jahre bewusst feministische Intentionen mit konzeptuellen und ästhetischen Strategien. Parallel zu ihren Arbeiten mit Buchstaben, die häufig im öffentlichen Raum inszeniert wurden und ihren Mail-Art Aussendungen, setzte sie ihren eigenen nackten Körper als künstlerisches Werkzeug ein.

In der Ausstellung werden zentrale Werke der Künstlerin präsentiert. Im Außenraum, vor dem Museum, ist The Legality of Space installiert. Erstmals 1971 auf dem Freiheitsplatz in Łódź gezeigt, besteht die Installation aus Verkehrs- sowie selbst gestalteten Gebots- und Verbotsschildern und macht auf die staatliche Kontrolle des öffentlichen Raums aufmerksam. Für Change ließ sich die Künstlerin 1974 eine Hälfte ihres Gesichts als alternde Frau schminken und plakatierte 1978 rund 600 Poster dieser Transformation in der Stadt. In Self – Identification von 1980 collagierte sie ihren nackten Körper in Straßenszenen und betrat zur Ausstellungseröffnung nackt den Gehsteig vor der Galerie in dem Moment, als sich dort eine Hochzeitsgesellschaft vor einem Standesamt aufhielt. My touch is the touch of a woman – dieser Satz steht unter dem lippenstiftroten Kussmund auf einem ihrer Mail-Art-Blätter von 1971, versehen mit der Bemerkung poem by ewa.

Mit conceptual exercises wird eine künstlerische Position vorgestellt, die intellektuell klar und präzise ist, gesellschaftliche Sprengkraft entfaltet, und gleichzeitig von Liebe und Sanftmut getragen ist.
