Hardly had Lothar Wolleh completed his studies under Otto Steinert when he travelled to Milan to meet Lucio Fontana. In the early 1960s, Wolleh worked for renowned advertising agencies; however, it was his collaboration with artists that proved formative for his work.

In 1963, an intensive dialogue began with the 'Grande Maestro' of ZERO, Lucio Fontana. Until Fontana’s death in 1968, Wolleh visited his studio on Corso Monforte in Milan at least thirteen times.

During this period, Wolleh developed his concept of the photographic art book. The Wolleh–Fontana Cassette marked his first project of this kind and proved to be a model for the editions and artists’ books of the following years. The portraits presented and the joint edition of 1966/67 document the dialogue with Fontana and mark a decisive step in the development of Wolleh’s photographic thinking and his understanding of the art book as an independent medium.

The scholarly work of the Lothar Wolleh Estate reveals connections and relationships that long remained overlooked. It makes it possible to present rare collaborative works whose creative and unconventional origins did not conform to established curatorial notions of photography and art and were therefore overlooked for an extended period of time.

Kaum hatte Lothar Wolleh sein Studium bei Otto Steinert abgeschlossen, reiste er nach Mailand zu Lucio Fontana. Anfang der 1960er Jahre arbeitete Wolleh für renommierte Werbeagenturen; prägend für sein Werk wurde jedoch die Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern.

1963 begann ein intensiver Dialog mit dem "Grande Maestro" des ZERO, Lucio Fontana. Bis zu Fontanas Tod im Jahr 1968 besuchte Wolleh dessen Atelier am Corso Monforte in Mailand mindestens dreizehn Mal.

In dieser Phase entwickelte Wolleh sein Konzept des fotografischen Kunstbuchs. Die "Wolleh-Fontana-Kassette" markiert sein erstes Projekt dieser Art und erwies sich als Modell für die Editionen und Künstlerbücher der folgenden Jahre. Die gezeigten Porträts und die gemeinsame Edition von 1966/67 dokumentieren den Dialog mit Fontana und markieren einen entscheidenden Schritt in der Entwicklung von Wollehs fotografischem Denken und seiner Auffassung des Kunstbuchs als eigenständiges Medium.

Die wissenschaftliche Arbeit des Lothar Wolleh Estate macht Zusammenhänge und Beziehungen sichtbar, die lange unbeachtet blieben. Sie ermöglicht es, seltene Kooperationswerke zu zeigen, deren kreative und unkonventionelle Entstehung etablierten kuratorischen Vorstellungen von Fotografie und Kunst nicht entsprach und die daher über einen langen Zeitraum übersehen wurden.
