Maman est là is a photographic project about motherhood, care, and invisibility. Through images of the artist’s children alone, the work explores the quiet erasure of mothers from the family archive. Always present yet rarely seen, the maternal figure remains behind the camera, shaping each moment through care and attention. The project reframes family photography as a feminist gesture, making visible the unseen labor that sustains childhood and insisting on maternal presence as both personal and political.
Julie Scheurweghs (°1988) is a Belgian photographer living and working in Brussels. Her practice uses intimacy as resistance, centering womanhood and motherhood as political terrains. Drawing from her experience as a mother and solo parent, she makes visible the labor of care and the quiet erasure of women from family histories. Through photography and books, Scheurweghs reclaims the everyday as a site of memory, authorship, and feminist insistence.
At Vue Gallery, we are dedicated to placing women in the picture.
Our mission is to represent and support FLINTA artists (Female, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-binary, Trans, and Agender). We champion feminist perspectives in photography and visual culture that challenge dominant narratives, expand visual language, and question entrenched power structures. We believe in the power of images to shape culture, and in the urgency of making space for voices that have too often been overlooked or excluded.
Vue Gallery is a platform for critical reflection, celebration, and solidarity.
