After more than 20 years of successfully presenting the permanent exhibition Helmut Newton’s Private Property on the ground floor of the Museum for Photography, we have decided to expand the concept and radically overhaul the presentation. The core objective – to use this space to illuminate the lives of Helmut Newton and his wife, June – remains. Furthermore, the temporary exhibitions on the first floor will continue to contextualize the work of Helmut Newton and Alice Springs twice a year through alternating solo and group shows.

As a transitional step in this transformation, the Helmut Newton Foundation presents a cinematic Intermezzo featuring Helmut Newton in an immersive space. On the ground floor, eight video projectors cast a film across four screens. The production is partly based on a film portrait created three years ago for a major Newton exhibition at the MOP Foundation in A Coruña, Spain, produced by Profirst International in collaboration with Martin Salvador Studio. This footage is now supplemented by previously unreleased material from various sources, including personal recordings by June Newton recently reviewed and digitized in the foundation’s archives. For the first time, Berlin audiences can watch interviews with numerous voices from Newton’s world – including Philippe Garner, Carla Sozzani, Jenny Capitain, Violetta Sanchez, and Matthias Harder – offering an entirely new way to experience Newton’s oeuvre. Edited into a seamless loop, the film offers visitors a surprising and content-rich experience.

In the rear section of the ground-floor gallery, nearly 100 of Newton’s exhibition posters remain on view, though the setting has been refreshed to include several posters from Alice Springs’ solo exhibitions. In the 16-meter (approx. 52-foot) display case beneath the posters, the vintage magazines featuring Newton’s published work have been swapped out for the Intermezzo presentation. They now feature different fashion and lifestyle titles and include editorial work by Alice Springs, such as issues of Jardin des Modes, Elle, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Egoïste, Stern, The New Yorker, Photo, and Paris Match. While the physical display remains the same, the content has shifted. Walking the length of the showcase continues to offer an intense look at the evolution of fashion photography and the changing image of women in the Western world – from the late 1950s to the turn of the 21st century – capturing the revolutionary social upheavals of the 1960s and ‘70s and their visual impact on fashion, which, as we know, always mirrors the zeitgeist.

In the corridors flanking Intermezzo, large wall panels feature illustrated biographies on the life and work of Helmut and June Newton, displayed alongside framed portraits of the foundation’s two founders. Opposite the massive poster wall, a new curatorial series titled Spotlight: Behind the Frame makes its debut. This concept, which will be refreshed at irregular intervals, focuses on a single iconic photograph by Helmut Newton or Alice Springs. It illuminates the history of the image’s creation and distribution through contact sheets, original publications, notes, preparatory Polaroids, and related shots. The series launches with Rue Aubriot, Newton’s legendary 1975 fashion photograph for French Vogue shot on the street of the same name, alongside the first photograph in Alice Springs’ oeuvre: a 1970 advertisement for Gitanes cigarettes featuring a smoking male model, also shot in Paris. This miniature exhibition format will eventually be handed over to guest curators to provide fresh, external perspectives on the work of Helmut Newton and Alice Springs. In doing so, the foundation is literally opening itself and its archives for new encounters.

The future permanent exhibition of the Helmut Newton Foundation, scheduled to open in late 2027 following the cinematic Intermezzo, will engage even more dynamically with the various facets of both photographers’ work. This future presentation will also see the return of many of Helmut and June Newton’s beloved personal items, reimagined in a completely new display format and enriched by audio and video commentary.

Nach über 20 Jahren erfolgreicher Vermittlung in der Dauerausstellung "Helmut Newton’s Private Property" im Erdgeschoss des Museums für Fotografie haben wir uns entschieden, das Ausstellungskonzept zu erweitern und die bisherige Präsentation radikal zu verändern. Die Grundidee, in diesem Raum über das Leben von Helmut Newton und seiner Frau June zu informieren, bleibt bestehen. Auch die Wechselausstellungen im ersten Stock kontextualisieren weiterhin zweimal im Jahr mal als Einzel-, mal als Gruppenausstellung das Werk von Helmut Newton und Alice Springs immer wieder aufs Neue.

Der Zwischenschritt der Transformation der bisherigen Dauerausstellung bietet ein filmisches "Intermezzo" mit Helmut Newton in einem überwältigenden Filmraum. Im Erdgeschoss projizieren acht Videobeamer einen Film auf vier Leinwände. Der Film basiert in Teilen auf dem Filmporträt, das vor drei Jahren für eine große Newton-Ausstellung in A Coruña entstand, produziert von Profirst International in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Martin Salvador Studio für die dortige MOP Foundation. Ergänzt wird es durch bislang ungezeigtes Filmmaterial. Hierfür wurden unterschiedliche Quellen herangezogen, unter anderem Material von June Newton, welches vor Kurzem im hauseigenen Archiv aufgearbeitet und digitalisiert wurde. Erstmals sehen die BesucherInnen damit nun auch in Berlin Interviews mit einem Dutzend Zeitzeugen, unter anderem mit Philippe Garner, Carla Sozzani, Jenny Capitain, Violetta Sanchez oder Matthias Harder und können das Werk Newtons gänzlich neu erfahren. Der Film ist zu einem Endlos-Loop zusammengeschnitten und bietet den interessierten BesucherInnen ein überraschendes und inhaltlich verdichtetes Erlebnis.

Im hinteren Teil des Ausstellungsraumes im Erdgeschoss des Museums hängen weiterhin knapp 100 Ausstellungsplakate von Newton, allerdings in einem veränderten Setting und ergänzt durch mehrere Plakate unterschiedlicher Alice Springs-Einzelausstellungen. In der 16 Meter langen Vitrine unter den Postern wurden die Vintage-Magazine mit Newtons publiziertem Werk für die neue temporäre Präsentation "Intermezzo" durch andere Mode- und Lifestylemagazine ersetzt und mit Zeitschriften-Editorials von Alice Springs kombiniert, darunter Magazine wie Jardin des Modes, Elle, Vogue, Vanity Fair, Egoïste, Stern, The New Yorker, Photo oder Paris Match. An dieser Stelle bleibt also das Ausstellungsdisplay gleich, nur der Inhalt ändert sich. Das langsame Abschreiten der Wandvitrine offenbart weiterhin einen intensiven Einblick in die Entwicklung der Modefotografie und des sich wandelnden Frauenbildes in der westlichen Welt von den späten 1950er-Jahren bis zum Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts, inklusive der revolutionären gesellschaftlichen Umbrüche in den 60ern und 70ern und ihren visuellen Auswirkungen – bis in die Mode hinein, die ja bekanntlich den Zeitgeist widerspiegelt.

Daneben, in den Korridoren von "Intermezzo", werden große Texttafeln mit illustrierten Biografien zum Leben und Werk von Helmut und June Newton sowie gerahmte Porträtfotografien der beiden Stiftungsgründer präsentiert. Und gegenüber der riesigen Posterwand beginnt eine neue kuratorische Idee, die später unter dem Motto "Spotlight: Behind the Frame" in unregelmäßigen Intervallen wiederholt wird: Eine jeweils ikonische Fotografie aus dem Werk von Helmut Newton oder Alice Springs wird in den Fokus gerückt, indem ihre Entstehungs- und Distributionsgeschichte anhand von Kontaktabzügen des Shootings, den Veröffentlichungen des konkreten Bildes, ggf. Notizen, vorbereitenden Polaroids und vergleichbaren Aufnahmen beleuchtet wird. Es beginnt mit "Rue Aubriot", der legendären Modeaufnahme Newtons aus Paris, aufgenommen in der titelgebenden Straße für die französische Vogue im Jahr 1975, sowie der ersten Fotografie im Werk von Alice Springs: das rauchende männliche Modell, ein Werbebild für Gitanes-Zigaretten, aufgenommen 1970 ebenfalls in Paris. Diese Ausstellungsidee im Miniaturformat soll später auch von GastkuratorInnen weitergeführt werden, wodurch ein externer, frischer Blick auf das Werk von Helmut Newton und Alice Springs ermöglicht wird. Die Foundation und ihre Archive werden auf diese Weise im wahrsten Wortsinn für eine Neubegegnung geöffnet.

Die zukünftige Dauerausstellung der Helmut Newton Foundation, die nach dem Ende des filmischen Intermezzos ab Ende 2027 zu sehen sein wird, wird dann noch dynamischer auf die unterschiedlichen Aspekte beider fotografischer Werke reagieren. Im Rahmen der späteren Präsentation werden uns auch manche der beliebten persönlichen Gegenstände von Helmut und June Newton wieder begegnen, allerdings in einem vollkommen neuen Display und durch Audio- oder Videokommentare ergänzt.
